On April 8th, 2026, the WFM RD&A facilitated the annual Agency Administrator WFDSS Refresher.


Special guests, Steven Miller, Forest Service Deputy Director - Operations and Aviation, Fire and Aviation Management (acting) and Jason Fallon, DOI Wildland Fire Service Division Chief - Wildland Fire Intelligence, set the stage by laying out Leaders Intent around the 2026 fire year, highlighting the continued importance of collaboration and communication in what is predicted to be a challenging year.


The WFM RD&A team then led attendees through the risk informed decision making process using the WFDSS application, from getting started through publishing a decision.


How to get your certificate

Sign in to the Wildland Fire Learning Portal, select Course Catalog from the Find Learning tab.

Search for “Agency Administrator WFDSS Refresher 2026.” Select the course name and self enroll.



If you missed the live event, watch the Webinar Recording, complete the Required Feedback, and access the Certificate.

Over 440 individuals logged in during the live session and within 7 days, 200 users had provided feedback and received their certificates.

WFDSS OFFICE HOURS


WFDSS Office Hours will continue biweekly through the 2026 season on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 1300 mtn. The next session will be hosted on May 13, 2026.

Engagement has been phenomenal in the first year of the Office Hours session, both live and recorded, as well as the associated teams chat.


It has been great to see users interacting, sharing tips and tricks, and helping each other find solutions. It's a true team effort!


Getting Help through the

Remote Incident Support Team (RIST)


During the 2026 Fire Season, the RIST will be collaborating with WFM RD&A to provide WFDSS Decision Support to incidents and local units. Additionally, fire modeling can be provided to incidents in the Northern Rockies, Great Basin and Southwest in collaboration with the Geographic Area DSC Leads.



A YEAR in Review

March 26th, 2026 marked the 1-year anniversary for WFDSS (Next Gen) as the official system of record for Federal wildland fire incidents.

During the first 1st year:

  • 3,786 users were granted access and roles to the WFDSS Production environment to contribute to active decision content.
  • 17% of users self-certified as Approvers.
  • 1,405 decisions/assessments were published across 461 incidents.
  • The WFDSS Homepage was viewed 18,168 times with 29,332 total views of help content.
  • The WFM RD&A YouTube channel hosts 5 playlists with 88 videos specific to WFDSS and SFPS with ~7K views.
  • Of the submissions received through the Feedback form, over 60% have been integrated into the application and 20% have been used to prioritize help documentation.
