FREE Credit Report

We spend more freely during November and December, causing us to lose track of our finances. Unfortunately, scammers and thieves also know this to be true, so it’s essential that you pull a copy of your free credit report in January and review it carefully.

You're entitled to receive one free copy of your credit report annually from each of the three credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion), so a total of three reports each year. You can pull a copy online at www.annualcreditreport.com. Rather than pulling all three reports at once, we recommend pulling one of the reports every four months - January, April & September. This will help you keep a year-round eye on your credit report and catch potentially fraudulent activity sooner.

If you need assistance understanding your credit report, or would like advice for building or raising your credit score, please contact the credit union.
Apply for the 2021 Warren A. Morrow Memorial Scholarship program, which will award scholarships to high school seniors and individuals entering or attending an accredited undergraduate, graduate, or vocational program in 2021. Applicants must be a current member (not just their parent) of an Iowa credit union.

Please click the following link for complete scholarship details, essay question, online application, and scholarship program guidelines. Applications must be submitted by Friday, February 5, 2021, at 5:00 pm.

Winners will be notified in April of 2021, and the results will be posted on www.IowaCreditUnionFoundation.org

Habits That Can Ruin Your Budget

So you’ve set a budget, and it looks perfect on paper. You established different spending categories and set what seems like reasonable limits. Yet somehow, it just doesn’t work out month after month.

Sound familiar? The first thing to do is double-check that your budget is reasonable given factors like income and goals. But if everything looks set up for success, then ask yourself if any of these common financial habits are derailing your well-laid plans:

1. Impulse purchases
2. Blurring the line between needs and wants
3. Not tracking your spending
4. Failing to comparison shop
5. You don’t automate your savings
