Enid's Story: From Diagnosis to Paying It Forward

Despite facing challenges like chemotherapy and surgery, Enid embraced life fully, finding joy in family, travel, and hobbies.

Now, she pays it forward by supporting others with bladder cancer, advocating for awareness, and offering peer support.

Enid's story is a reminder that with determination and support, life can indeed get better after a cancer diagnosis.
Provide Insights on the Effects of Bladder Cancer in New Survey

Both bladder cancer patients and caregivers are invited to take part in a study on how bladder cancer affects you.

Your participation will provide crucial information that can enhance our understanding of treatment from diagnosis and quality of life during and after treatment. Patient respondents are especially needed. Participants will be compensated $CA 30.00 for survey completion. The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete.
For NMIBC patients: Currently or previously treated for NMIBC, diagnosed at least one year ago, not in a clinical trial.

For MIBC patients: Diagnosed within the last two years, had bladder surgery or refused/ ineligible within one year of diagnosis, not in a clinical trial.

The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete, and your input will truly make a difference. If you're interested in taking part, please email the study coordinator and indicate whether you are a patient with Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer (NMIBC) or Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer (MIBC) or caregiver.
If you would be interested in learning more about this or other studies and/ or want to share your story with other bladder cancer patients, please click HERE.

The Role of Osr1 in Bladder Cancer
Odd-skipped related 1 (Osr1) is a protein that plays a role as a tumour suppressor in breast, lung, gastric, and renal cancers. Recent research suggests that Osr1 loss-of-function mutations may also lead to cancer cell proliferation in the bladder. A study proposed by Alonso, Kassouf, Gupta and colleagues will use mice models to investigate the hypothesis that Osr1 loss promotes the development of muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) via two mechanisms: (1) by increasing collagen deposition in the bladder tissue, which provides a more favourable microenvironment for tumour formation, growth and invasion into the muscle layer; and (2) by promoting the migration and invasion of cells on the surface of the bladder (the epithelium) towards the deeper layers of tissue. The study will also examine which regions of DNA are regulated by Osr1, thus elucidating how it suppresses tumour growth at the genomic level. This research has the potential to identify a novel biomarker of bladder cancer that can be used for both prognosis and treatment purposes.

Fun fact about you: I'm a student in academia hoping to pursue cancer research, with the hopes of providing knowledge that can help patients in the clinic.

Why are you passionate about volunteering for BCC: To get the opportunity to educate myself more about bladder cancer, offering support to others directly with the resources available within BCC, and putting a smile on people’s faces.
