In this presentation, Dr. Sevelius will provide an overview of gender-affirming mental health care for transgender and gender diverse adults, highlighting its critical role in improving health outcomes and overall well-being. They will introduce the Model of Gender Affirmation, a framework that elucidates the importance of access to psychological, medical, social, and legal measures that are supportive and affirming for transgender individuals. The session will explore the evidence-based benefits of gender-affirming interventions while addressing barriers to access and structural challenges faced by these communities. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how comprehensive gender-affirming care fosters resilience, reduces disparities, and promotes equity, and gain practical skills to deliver gender-affirming services.

Jae Sevelius, PhD, is Professor of Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry) at Columbia University Medical Center and a licensed clinical psychologist. They work with community-led research teams to develop, implement, and evaluate trauma-informed, gender-affirming HIV prevention and treatment interventions for transgender and gender expansive people in New York, California, and Brazil, including psychedelic-assisted therapy for identity-based trauma. They are known internationally for their expertise in gender-affirming intervention strategies and the role of social and psychological gender affirmation in health and well-being. Dr. Sevelius is also a dedicated mentor of early-stage investigators, with a focus on those with backgrounds and identities that are under-represented in academic medicine.
