School of Medicine July Update

July 2023 Edition

On Writing a Good LOR

This is the season that our seniors are requesting letters of recommendation (LORs). We appreciate the thousands of letters written by our faculty. Some new faculty may not have written a LOR for a medical student before, and often faculty may wish to be updated on the current process. Thus, we have published a quick guide (5 minute read) to writing LORs - available at this link.

Committee Opportunity!

The WSUSOM Curriculum Management Committee is reviewing our institutional competencies, i.e., what we should be teaching and assessing for our students. We are looking for community input as we work through this process. If you are interested in participating in the important effort that will define what we teach, send us a note of interest to hannah.levine@med.wayne.edu.

Cheers to Our Excellent Teachers!

In our last email we let you know that the resident and faculty teaching awards recipients have been selected. Now, we can update you to let you know that awards are all packed up and already beginning distribution! Congrats again to our excellent teachers! We hope each and every one of you wears your pin proudly.

New Professionalism & Unprofessionalism Links

Ever wonder how to honor a student's positive professional behavior or how to report a student's negative unprofessional behavior? We have answers! Check out our new professionalism submission process below!

Reward excellent and impressive students with a PEARLS nomination! Positive PEARLS submissions can help a student get into their residency of choice!

Report students struggling with unprofessional or inappropriate behavior with a Misconduct submission. These students will be taken to committee to address the behavior and find appropriate solutions for moving forward.

Class of 2027 White Coat Ceremony

Cheers to the Class of 2027! Our second years will be donning their short white coats for the first time this month and we can't wait to welcome them to the white coat family. To many years of hard work and helping to serve and heal the community ahead!

How to Look at Your Own Evaluations

Want to know how the students are responding to your teaching style? To access evaluations, you need to login to New Innovations using "wayneume" as the institution.

If you need help with your username and password, please contact records@med.wayne.edu.

Here, you can view the evaluations you've completed and any evaluations completed about you. All evaluations are anonymously completed about you, so they may not be viewable depending on administrator configurations. WSUSOM delays viewing of all student evaluations of preceptors for 90 days following completion of the clerkship or elective. This is done to avoid conflict and concerns of reprisal on the part of the student and hopefully leads to honest, valuable feedback for both student and faculty/resident evaluators.

First, go to Evaluations Completed Evaluations > View Completed Evaluations

  1. If you also work with GME learners, make sure to sign into wayneume to look for the student evaluations and click on the UME Medical School Evaluations tab.
  2. Select a Class Definition (specific class or year) or choose All
  3. Check the box in front of a completed evaluation and click View Selected UME evaluations
  4. Evaluations from students are always marked "Anonymous" as we expect faculty and residents will not know the identity of the student evaluators.
  5. Print or export if you want:
  • You can use your browser to print: right-click on the page and select Print from the browser menu
  • Click Export to Excel to export the data to a spreadsheet format

Resident and Faculty Handbook

If you have not already, please take a look at our updated Resident and Faculty Handbook. This handbook includes important information for all of our teachers, including specific guidance on our new evaluation form that includes evaluation questions on communication skills, as well as the updated goals and objectives for all required clerkships and subinternships.
