Northwest Aviation Conference & Trade Show
WAAAM once again had a presence at the Northwest Aviation Conference & Trade Show in Puyallup, WA on February 20-21. Judy Newman, Ken Olsson and Jo Masterson staffed the WAAAM booth, pitching the museum to trade show visitors who'd never been here and pitching our ongoing growth to those who have.
The turnout was, as always, large bringing lots of people to our booth so we could let them know what we're doing here in Hood River. The aerial photo of last year's Fly-in was a hit with everyone. Pilots who'd flown in looked for their planes and we happily showed everyone where the new construction was going to happen and where we'd be adding airplane parking. Also fun was showing visitors that the full page Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association ad in the show program featured a beautiful photo of our Waco YPF-6.
We went home tired but pleased with the weekend.

Aircraft Restoration
Progress Report from Jay
On Tuesday March 1st we moved the Stearman model 70 from the comforts of our restoration shop, out into the main H1 hanger
 for final assembly. The completion
of this aircraft is a momentous occasion that everyone here at WAAAM has been looking forward to for a very long time.
Jay
The Stearman 70 was the only one of this airplane ever built. To learn the truly epic tale of this airplane's birth, the monumental impact it had on WWII in the form of the Kaydet trainers (aka Model 75s), it's untimely demise and eventual rebirth after being parted out and scattered to the breeze, join us at 1:00PM for this special talk.
The restoration of this airplane has been ongoing since at least the 80s. We're bringing in the guy that has done the most work on it, Tom Murphy, along with the current head of the restoration department, Jay Matson Bell, to tell the story and give a special tour of the shop to take a close look at the airplane.
While the museum has often shared parts of this story, for the first time ever we are putting all the pieces together for visitors to enjoy in one talk. For those that cannot make the 1pm talk a regular shop tour will be given at 11am too. Although the airplane will not be flying or running its engine during the event we are pleased to say that it officially looks like an airplane now. The big push to finish this project coincides with the 100 year anniversary of Boeing. The relationship between Stearman and Boeing is another tale for another day and I'm sure Jay could tell it better than me anyway.

Judy Newman
Director of WAAAM.
"WAAAM has had a busy February. Our attendance has been good, but oh my gosh the volunteers have been busy. Jay has had a big crew in the shop trying to get the Waco 9 and Stearman 70 finished. The car guys have been moving cars, planning on the new auto shop building and getting automobiles ready to drive. The steam crew did get the big gear cast, delivered, and Jack is getting it finished on his milling machine. The steam tractor has all new steel tubes welded into the chamber....what a month. Ken and I, with my daughter Jo, put together the display for the NW Aviation Show sponsored buy the Washington Pilots Association, which is always a success for us. We talked with lots of old friends, new friends and friends yet to come. It was fantastic. Thanks for all the volunteer help in loading trailers, setting up and unloading. Building project of the BIG new hangar on schedule, with plans being sent into the county for permits, etc. The car building (our 30X36) should be ready to start going up the middle of March and we are going to need volunteers to help, so we will e-mail out the word for "help" days. We are busy getting ready for a very busy season and thanks to you all, it will be a great one.

In celebration of
Women's History Month the
award-wining
documentary on DVD -
Breaking Through the Clouds: The First Women's National Air Derby
will be available for sale in the Museum Store
Breaking Through the Clouds is the inspiring true story of twenty women who raced across America in the First Women's National Air Derby. Amelia Earhart, Pancho Barnes, Louise Thaden, and Bobbi Trout are just a few of the courageous women who competed in this historical race from California to Ohio in the summer of 1929. With just a compass and a road map to guide them, they navigated through cultural stereotypes, mechanical failures, threats of sabotage, emergency landings, and endless chicken dinners. Their story is inspiring for anyone seeking the courage to follow their own dreams.
