Don’t Push A Tissue In My Face – how to be a good friend like a coach

Hello Carole Ann,

You know a problem shared is a problem halved? And that misery loves company? So why does it feel so isolating?

Sure it feels good to cry on someone’s shoulder but what if said shoulder was unsafe and dislocated from real comfort?

There is a real art to “holding a space” for someone which is coach speak for saying just be kind, be there, be quiet and let them download. As coaches we are masters of being calm, sitting with silence, offering insightful questions, showing empathy and just simply “allowing”.

Without going through our dark times, voicing them, looking at them and, giving yourself permission to commune with pain, you are storing up unhappiness, depression and ill health later. We have all been through it and we will all go through it. Pain is inevitable but suffering is optional - as the Zen masters say, but it shouldn’t be embarrassing too.

Sometimes I have suppressed my own hurt, even when sharing with others, in order to make them feel better; even making people laugh to ease their discomfort while I wailed inside. My pain was too much for them to deal with. Have you been there?

So here’s a life tool kit for being a bestie like a boss and making a success out of succour

The Don’ts

  • Only pass on a tissue if they are drowning in their own tears and are resorting to blowing their nose on the curtains.
  • Passing a tissue means “Please stop. Take this. Mop it up. I can’t handle your pain”.
  •  It feels like you are “doing” something when you feel powerless as to what to do but it’s a lame move despite it coming from a kind place. The problem is not a lack of Kleenex.
  • Do not see this as your excuse to “out pain” someone with your tales of woe “Oh that’s nothing when I went through that I …(add your hero/survivor story here) ”. This isn’t an agony competition.
  • Resist from saying “It will be OK”. It’s not OK right now and that’s what they need to focus on.
  • Resist the glib “I am so glad I don’t have children/a partner/my own business” line which may be your deep relief but sincerely lacks compassion and makes you look uncaring.
  • Don’t think a hug is always necessary or welcome. Ask first.

How To Be a Best Pal like a Boss

  • Encourage them to let it all out and emote as much as they like.
  • Ask kind, interested questions.
  • Empathise – “Yes it sucks. I can see how hurt you are. How are you feeling?”
  • Allow them to commune with the rage, fury, isolation, confusion and despair
  • Manage your own discomfort by focusing on their needs.
  • It’s not about finding a solution or making sense of something. Resist “fixing”
  • Think of how you are helping but do not absorb their pain. It’s not your job to take it on.
  • Follow up after with little morning texts to show you care and are there
  • Allow them to talk about it after when they may feel vulnerable for opening up.
  •  Ask them what they need right now.

Be the beam of light on someone’s cloudy day and may we all learn to be the shoulder that is always a comfort when times are tough.
