NEW IBERIA, La. -- The Iberia Performing Arts League is proud to announce as its Chrismas season production "A Christmas Carol" by Michael Paller based on the classic Dickens novella of the same name.
The show will run December 1 - 11, 2016, with Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at the door, but advance sale tickets can be purchased at the usual IPAL outlets (Delaune's Pharmacy, The Daily Iberian, and Paul's Flower Shop). Tickets are available online at EventBrite.com (search IPAL), as well as by calling (337) 364-6114 and leaving a message. Tickets are $10 and seating is open.
The cast is led by Vincent P. Barras playing both Charles Dickens and Ebenezer Scrooge. Additional cast members are Mitch Prudhomme, Kevin Judice, Teresa Rymer, John Lagneaux, Kipp Gary, Laurielle Watkins, Jaci Suarez, Ben Morvant, and Jack Burleigh. A group of 14 carolers decked out in 1840s style will entertain before and during the show.
This novel version of the traditional play presents a play within a play within a play. We first meet Charles Dickens, then his family coming for a Christmas Eve celebration. But rather than a normal party, Dickens decides to have his family and friends actually act out a story - Christmas Carol, of course.
According to director, Donald "Doc" Voorhies, "The show is filled with humor, poignancy, and fun. It tells the beloved story of Dickens' famous book, but adds new dimensions in family scenes as well as Dickens' own narration." He added, "All of the cast has been fantastic in preparing the complex production giving their own ideas to improve their characters. The kids playing the beloved Tiny Tim, Fan, and other children are wonderful."
The carolers, under choral director Hellon Hodge, aid in getting the audience into the spirit presenting a mini concert of popular Christmas songs which go back to the 1840s. Carolers include Ian Bonin, Jada Cormier, Emma Frederick, Hannah Gaspard, Jacob Judice, Kaylon Khamphilavong, Mike LaBiche, Sarah Lagneaux, William Lambert, Maggie Landry, Shelbi Romero, Conner Smith, Triston Thorne, and David Wattigny.
IPAL is supported in part by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Art Works.
