Did you know that oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide? It's a shocking fact, but unfortunately, not many people know the signs and symptoms, which can make it harder to treat. April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and we're here to spread the word and educate you on how to detect oral cancer early.

Risk factors for oral cancer

It is important to be aware of common risk factors that can contribute to oral cancer – these include:

  • Age oral cancer is more common in older adults
  • Genderoral cancers are more common in males than females
  • Alcohol and tobacco — these significantly increase the risk for oral cancer
  • Sun Exposure — this increases the risk especially for cancers of lips
  • HPV — human papillomavirus is a virus associated with oral cancers, especially in the back of the throat. HPV is a risk factor for younger patients. Vaccination is available which can help to prevent HPV and is strongly recommended
