Staying Healthy This Time of Year

Tis the season, as our community has seen an increase in illness due to a variety of respiratory viruses, some of our schools are experiencing high rates of illness as well. When a school has more than 10% of students absent due to illness, health office staff report that information to Linn County Public Health and the Iowa Department of Public Health.

In addition, our custodial department performs increased cleaning and disinfection in the affected schools. School nurses also provide students and staff education regarding prevention measures:

  1. Covering your cough/sneeze with a tissue or elbow
  2. Frequent handwashing
  3. Staying home when you are sick
  4. Getting vaccinated to help protect against influenza and COVID 19

Federal Census Data

Following each federal decennial census, Iowa school boards, which are divided into director districts, must comply with Iowa Code Section 275.23A and review the Director District boundaries to determine whether current boundaries comply with existing laws.

Last summer, CRCSD contracted with Mapping Strategies to conduct the analysis of the new

population numbers from the 2020 census data and review director district maps using the requirements provided in Iowa Code to see if director districts conformed.

During Monday’s Board meeting, the Board will be asked to consider approval of a Resolution which outlines the revisions to the director district maps.

Harding Students Use Their Brainwaves to Make Music

This fall, Harding 6th-grade band students learned how to control their brain waves to be more successful. A series of workshops entitled the ME Residency uses technology to show students the connections between brain science, mental well-being, and music.

Jason Snell, a Creative Technologist from Cedar Rapids, inspired the workshops using EEG Technology and Music to read brain waves.

The goal of the Residency is to make students more independent by giving them greater control over how they react to day-to-day events.

Jefferson Freshman Core

is Making an Impact

With almost one-half of the school year complete, early grade data shows success for the Jefferson Freshman Core Program. This is the first year that all ninth graders at Jefferson are enrolled, a building-wide shift based on the positive results from the BlendEd program over the last several years.

The results are encouraging, with a couple weeks left in the first semester. "Our grade data is exceeding expectations," says Charlie Goetzinger, Jefferson's Freshman Core facilitator.
