SEAKEEPERS CELEBRATES EARTH DAY

YOT Dockbar Event On Thursday, April 22nd, the SeaKeepers team and industry partner, YATCO hosted an exclusive social gathering in celebration of Earth Day. The evening took place at YOT Dockbar where guests learned more about SeaKeepers programming and engagement opportunities. Morningside Park Cleanup In celebration of Earth Day, SeaKeepers held a weekend cleanup at Morningside Park on April 25th. Approximately 50+ volunteers attended and cleaned the park and its shoreline collecting 94.8 pounds of trash. Data was also collected and uploaded via the CleanSwell app in support of the ongoing study conducted by Ocean Conservancy. Coral Reef Surveys February 2021 SeaKeepers assisted The Surfrider Foundation and Conservation Key in utilizing a commercial grade submersible/ROV to do coral reef surveys at the RJ’s Ledge reef aboard DISCOVERY Yacht Isabel. Learn more

Whale & Dolphin Survey February 2021 Dr. Jeremy Kiszka of Florida International University conducted visual identification on whale and dolphin activity in the waters off of Key Largo, FL aboard DISCOVERY Yacht Blue Pearl. Learn more

ROV Deployment & Testing March 2021 Blue Latitudes Foundation completed two open ocean deployments with the Deep Trekker DTG3 ROV to gather marine life data on artificial reefs and onshore oil platforms aboard DISCOVERY Yacht Cabrillo. Learn more

S.A.R.A.H. Initiative March 2021 DISCOVERY Yacht Zephyr deployed a plastic sample collection net along the coast of Barbuda after a long passage across the Atlantic from the Mediterranean. Partnered with Florida International University. Learn more

Park & Kayak Cleanup March 2021 At Morningside Park, 59 volunteers collected 152.2 pounds of trash from deep into the mangroves. They also kayaked across the Biscayne Bay to an island where they brought back a bunch of trash. Learn more

Monthly Beach Cleanup April 2021 In Virginia Key, Hobie Beach, 51 volunteers collected 9 trash bags with a total of 92.5 pounds. Each bag averaged out 10 pounds with most of the items being bottle caps, cigarette buds and soda cans. Learn more

Floating Classroom March 2021 Miami Waterkeepers’ Junior Ambassadors performed water quality tests to analyze properties using Secchi discs on Biscayne Bay and Little Mouth River aboard DISCOVERY Yacht Julia. Learn more

Ocean Alliance Presentation February 2021 SeaKeepers joined Ocean Alliance Girl’s STEM Club in a virtual talk about ocean conservation through the study of sharks, research and conservation with a total of 8 students. Learn more

Sensor Development in Piney Point, Florida April 2021  DISCOVERY Yacht Three Graces, owned and captained by SeaKeepers Board member and Scientific Advisory Council Chairman, Mark Luther, assisted a team from the University of South Florida College of Marine Science (USF CMS) to study the environmental impacts of a wastewater breach at Piney Point, a retired fertilizer processing plant in Manatee County, FL.
