Derelict Lobster Pot Removal
The Fisheries Team has been hard at work this spring collecting abandoned and derelict lobster pots from Long Island Sound. Over the course of seven trips out of Mt Sinai harbor, Fisheries staff, with tremendous help from local fisherman John German, have collected more than 800 pots. These pots will either be returned to their rightful owners, or recycled at a recycling facility. Removing these pots from the environment is important not only because of how they continue to contribute to the issues of marine debris in general but also because a significant number of them are still catching lobsters and are thus adding to the “fishing effort” for lobsters in Long Island Sound. Our data shows that 20% of the derelict lobster traps recovered had one or more lobsters in them and of this 20%, 4% of the lobsters were dead. This is known as “ghost fishing”. Over the years, the Fisheries team has pulled up over 19,000 lobster traps! For more about this program, visit the project page here.
