What’s your Wellness?
The official Global Wellness Day celebration is now just shy of 4 weeks, being held on Saturday, June 11th. That’s when our Spa Industry will have the opportunity to provide wellness activates for guests and participate in supporting the idea of living a healthy, fulfilling and joyful life. The theme this year is #ThinkMagenta, to encourage simple yet effective affirmations reminding people that living well begins in the mind. Due to the pervasiveness of social media and modern/digital technology, people are more conscious of their health and wellness. People of all ages concerned with living well and/or suffer with health issues have a lot more information at hand than they did years ago and with more options available now.
As colleagues in the Spa Industry we are cognizant that over-all health and wellness encourages the balance of physical activity, nutrition and mental fitness to keep our body in top shape. Obtaining an optimal level of physical wellness allows us to nurture personal responsibility for our own health. When we think of wellness in its space, we zoom in on emotional wellness by acknowledging our feelings, spiritual wellness which drives us to consider others and reach for the greater good and addressing our physical and social wellness.
For me personally, social wellness has become such an important dimension of self-well-being. After 2 years of taking shelter within the boundaries of Florida, as if in a cocoon, I avoided travel to stay inside my comfort zone since the start of 2020 due to COVID. Although the FSA did have the ability to hold several events in Florida over the past couple of years and the pleasure of connecting with industry friends in Florida and those that traveled to Florida, uniting with friends and associates from around the country recently at #ISPA2022 was cathartic for me. It was emotional and therapeutic to meet up with people that I hadn’t seen for what seemed like…...forever! It made me recognize just how important the role of friendship plays in well-being when I reconnected with our industry peers.
Friendships can have a major impact on health and wellness. Understanding the significance of social connection in life and how to develop and nurture lasting friendships can help offset stressors in life and go a long way in helping to deal with taxing situations. Good friends relieve stress, provide comfort and joy, and prevent loneliness and isolation. We all go through difficult periods throughout our lifetime and friends do help. I believe that friendship brings more happiness into our life than virtually anything else and has a huge impact on mental health and contentment. For me, there is nothing better than a full dose of girl time with good friends.
I am grateful for my recent experience, reconnecting with so many people at ISPA which has also helped validate my focus and contribution as a Global Wellness Day Ambassador in leading our Florida Spa Community for this year’s GWD festivities and help us all #ThinkMagenta!
Friendship and social connection……is good for your health!
Wishing Wellness

#ThinkMagenta is the theme for Global Wellness Day 2022. It is an idea that rises amidst the negativity in the world. A reminder with a positive effect on life!
This year Global Wellness Day Ambassadors, Key Supporters and volunteers will work together to change people’s lives in a positive way and to add color to their thoughts.
It can be difficult to change or influence the world around us, but we can change our reaction to what’s happening by influencing thoughts and providing a new perspective.
|
|
In 2022 Global Wellness Day Will…
-
Celebrate this special day with the theme #ThinkMagenta.
-
Invite people to #ThinkMagenta
- Recommend everyone simple but effective affirmations.
- Remind people that living well begins in the mind.

#THINKMAGENTA WITH A DEEP BREATH AND SMILE
|
|
In stressful, anxious, tense and negative moments, there is a very simple way to disperse the dark clouds:
1. Stop what you’re doing and calm down.
2. First take a deep breath and exhale. Even one breath is enough.
3. Afterwards immediately smile. Smile in spite of everything.
It’s that simple. You’ve already started to #ThinkMagenta
#ThinkMagenta is simple to do whether you are at home, in the office or outside.
“Even though GWD is only one day that inspires people to live well, it promotes a philosophy that spans the whole year. In 2022, we desperately need the spirit of GWD and we’re here to change the way people think. Quite simply… #ThinkMagenta.”
“We were just a few people when we set out on a journey for GWD – today more than 350 million people around the world celebrate it.” – Belgin Askoy, Founder GWD

"Voice-It" Spa Talk with Mitchell

When you know someone who is stuck in a rut, they tend to look for people in our profession for advice. Don’t you sometimes feel like you are the most successful, yet most unqualified counselor for your friends, family and co-workers? I’ve heard that people get stuck because they might be afraid of change. Well, that’s just B.S. If you get a new car, that’s the kind change that you welcome! Maybe, then it is fear of losing something you have and it getting replaced with something you don’t want? Newsflash! Change requires coping. Coping requires introspection. Coping with coping requires vulnerability. A good dose of vulnerability can lead to great conversations and even well-thought-out solutions. Brene’ Brown says true vulnerability leads to bravery. She does a great TED Talk on Vulnerability and here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCvmsMzlF7o
I’m gonna let a more qualified person on the subject take it from here…😉!

Rianon Cipriano –
Area Director, Arch Amenities Group,
Spa Director at The Don CeSar, St. Pete’s Beach
Rianon started her career in the Spa Industry as a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist and Health Educator. She graduated top of her class from the National Holistic Institute, in Emeryville CA. Her interest in the field of Massage Therapy came from growing up as a competitive dancer where she developed a fascination with the human anatomy and physiology.
Rianon's career has been on the fast track as she was recently promoted to Area Director at Arch Amenities Group while continuing her role as Spa Director at Don CeSar. She now also oversees sister properties in Clearwater and Tampa. Being part of a talented network of Spa Directors and focusing on driving corporate initiatives while achieving client goals remains an exhilarating experience for her. She appreciates sharing success stories and strategies and is grateful to partake in the support needed to grow the industry as the spa market flourishes in the beautiful State of Florida…..as well as having partnerships like the Florida Spa & Wellness Association to share it with.
|
|
When Rianon is not working, she finds peace and serenity by spending time exploring the beautiful sites of Florida with her daughters. Whether it's kayaking in Crystal River, climbing trees at TreeUmph, or seeing a concert at Amalie Arena, she always enjoy an adventure with them. She also enjoys painting and has recently been inspired by the Van Gogh exhibit.... expressly motivated by the mosaic at the Spa Oceana Front Desk. Taking time to enjoy the simple things life has to offer, using her creativity and being able to share that with the ones she love brings happiness and balance into her life.

Sleeping cool is the next big thing in sleep fitness.
Thermal environment is one of the biggest factors that can influence the quality of sleep. Creating a cool environment to aid a drop in core body temperature is important in sustaining a deep healthy sleep. The most pronounced drop in body temperature happens when you enter REM sleep. It’s the stage of deep sleep during which you typically see dreams. Core body temperature plays a key role in circadian rhythms which are linked to sleep disorders caused by disruptions in the body temperature. Sleeping on surfaces with greater conductive body heat loss increases the amount of deep sleep.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends keeping bedroom temperature cool during sleep, between 60 F to 67 F to ensure overall restful sleep and quality REM sleep .
Eight Sleep, originally called “Eight” was in reference to those fabled eight hours of recommended perfect sleep. The vision for Eight Sleep was to compress your sleep and improve your life. A good six hours, as it turns out, is better than eight hours that are not.

Recent ISPA 2022 Study Discloses
Spa Industry Revenues Rebound from 2020 Lows Indicating a Return to Near Pre-Pandemic Levels
|
|
The International SPA Association (ISPA) released the findings of the 2022 ISPA U.S. Spa Industry Study, which indicate a return to near pre-pandemic industry revenue levels even as staffing challenges persist. In addition, ISPA released a new consumer snapshot report detailing the evolving habits of contemporary spa-goers.
The ISPA Foundation commissioned PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct both studies. The U.S. Industry Study presents the “Big Five” spa industry statistics: total revenue, total spa visits, spa locations, revenue per visit and total number of U.S. spa industry employees. The consumer snapshot report captured the spending and spa-going habits of U.S. consumers, which indicate strong demand for spa services and an increased focus on personal well-being and at-home care.

Adopting Healthy Habits Can Add Up To 6 Years To Your Life — Even In Middle & Older Age
|
|
A new longevity study reveals that healthy lifestyle habits add up to six years to an individual's life—even if they're adopted in middle or older age. The study, published in Age and Ageing, followed 49,021 Japanese men and women ages 40 to 80 over two decades to analyze how modifiable health habits and behaviors affected their life expectancy.
Why this longevity study matters.
While other studies have been conducted on lifestyle habits, health status, and life expectancy in a number of countries with national life expectancy under 85 years, researchers wanted to see if adopting healthy habits in a country with a high life expectancy would also yield an increase in lifetime gains.

World could temporarily hit 1.5C warming within five years, WMO warns
|
|
The world could reach 1.5C of global warming within next five years, at least temporarily
Risk of reaching totemic climate threshold set out in the Paris Agreement on at least one of next five years now at 50 per cent, research shows
There is now a 50 per cent chance of average global warming temporarily reaching the critical 1.5C mark within the next five years, underscoring the scale of the climate crisis facing the planet and the rapid emissions cuts needed within the current decade to keep alive any hope of meeting the goals contained in the Paris Agreement.
