Let's Talk About It Series:
Making Sense of the Civil War

This series of discussions is led by well-known Civil War historian and popular Appalachian State professor Judkin Browning. It examines the meaning of the Civil War. Books to read for the discussions are available for checkout at the Library's upper level: Edward L. Ayers's anthology America's War: Talking about the Civil War and Emancipation on Their 150th Anniversaries; and James McPherson's bestselling Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam .

For our exciting Story Walks, the Library is partnering with Smoot Park and W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir (on the walking trail at the Fish Dam Creek Park). The current story at Smoot Park is Peter Brown's Children Make Terrible Pets , and at Fish Dam Creek Park is Leo & Diane Dillon's If Kids Ran the World .

The Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest is coming up. Drop off your decorated pumpkin October 7-12. Make sure the pumpkin is not carved or punctured in decorating it. You can vote for the best pumpkin October 14-26, with the winner to be announced on October 28.
