KIPP NC + Heart Math Tutoring = Math Readiness
In the 2022-2023 academic year, KIPP Change Change Academy established a partnership with Charlotte-based Heart Math Tutoring (Heart). Heart's mission is to "ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors." Many thanks to KIPP North Carolina Board of Directors member Jon Morris for presenting this amazing opportunity to support our scholars!

Conquering the Reading H-I-L-L:
KIPP NC partners with
Durham's Hill Learning Center
Since the 2020-2021 school year, KIPP North Carolina has partnered with the Hill Learning Center in Durham to provide the Hill Reading Achievement Program (HillRAP) to students across the region. HillRAP is a personalized, small-group reading intervention delivered by teachers and supported by technology and high-quality professional development. Grounded in the Science of Reading, this intervention emphasizes sequential, multi-sensory instruction that is direct, explicit, and mastery-based. HillRAP instruction develops students’ phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Intended for students who experience reading difficulties, this intervention is most effective when delivered in 45-minute blocks, 4-5 days per week, and in small groups of four or less. At KIPP North Carolina, HillRAP is delivered by our wonderful interventionists, Exceptional Children teachers, and Multi-Lingual teachers. Since the beginning of our partnership, more than 500 K-12 students have received HillRAP instruction and nearly 80% of them made above average growth on the basic early literacy skills assessments.

Clearing the Pathway to Promise, One Gift at a time
Spring is approaching and it is a time filled with possibilities. It is the season of promotion and graduation ceremonies. Middle school students will begin the next leg of their journeys through high school. High school students will start journeys through college, career, and beyond. Many students are excited, and some are fearful, but they are never alone. KIPP Forward serves to guide all KIPPsters through their next steps. Together, let’s remind all KIPPsters of our promise to always value, validate, love and support them through their postsecondary pathways. For every KIPPster - a future without limits.

KIPP North Carolina has added a dozen social workers to all KIPP NC campuses to continue advocating for and improving the lives of of our KIPPsters. We honor the commitment of all of our Social Work staff across the state who work tirelessly to bridge the gap between home, school, and community. From March 6-10, we recognized our mental wellness professionals during National School Social Work Week under the theme “We Rise.” Thank you, KIPP NC social workers!

Pride High helped Halifax social worker LaShana Carey, '10, feel limitless, unstoppable
"The value of a KIPP education has been transforming the possibilities of the students we serve and ourselves.
Our schools are just the beginning for some of us.
Before attending Pride High, I can vividly remember limiting my future to far less than a Master’s degree and a career in mental wellness. Because I am the first person in my family to receive an advanced degree, I am able to teach our students the importance of shifting mindsets, exploring outside of one’s comfort zone, and aspiring for past one’s limits.
Also, I have created a legacy for my child who will become whatever she wants to be in life. Because I did, my daughter will evolve to be far better than I could ever imagine to be."

You Can Now Make Gifts of Appreciated Assets to KIPP North Carolina Public Schools
In addition to the traditional methods of making cash gifts to KIPP North Carolina - with a check, pledge commitment, or through a donor advised fund (DAF) grant - we are now able to accept gifts of appreciated assets. Appreciated assets include publicly traded securities, real estate, and personal property (such as works of art, rare books, and antiques). For additional information or questions, email giving@kippnc.org
Why is this so exciting? A gift of appreciated assets can be advantageous to you and KIPP NC:
-
Tax benefits: When donating appreciated assets, such as stock shares, to KIPP NC, you generally can claim a federal income tax deduction (up to IRS limits) equal to the full fair market value of the securities at the time of the gift. Because the appreciated assets are going to our qualified charity, you will not realize any capital gains at the time of the gift, and can therefore potentially avoid capital gains taxes on the appreciation of the assets. The federal rate can be as high as 23.8%, which can significantly impact the amount of your gift.
-
More to give: By eliminating the long-term capital gains tax, you can essentially donate more than you otherwise could, because you are not paying the taxes realized on the sale of the asset. Plus, KIPP North Carolina won’t have to pay capital gains tax when we sell the donated securities. It is truly a win-win situation!
- You will know that your gift will have a genuine and lasting impact on KIPP North Carolina and our mission of creating a future without limits for our scholars.
