As part of this year's YCL calendar of Events - The TCA Young Construction Leaders (YCL) Committee invites you to attend a panel of Presidents discussing:

  • Our industry's biggest challenges/changes in the post-pandemic environment.
  • The current economic climate (high inflation) and how this is affecting our industry; current ongoing supply chain issues.
  • How are we going to address the labour shortage, and what is the outlook over the next 3-5 years

SEMINAR MODERATOR

Michael Whitely, GSC, CEC, Project Manager, Design-Build, (YCL Committee Chair) EllisDon Corporation, has been with EllisDon Corporation since 2011 as an Estimator in the Toronto Office and then switched to their Design-Build group as a Project Manager in 2018. Involved in the TCA YCL since 2017 after returning from Vancouver for three years with EllisDon, Michael was named Chair of the YCL committee in November 2022.

PANELISTS
Philip Ristevski, Managing Director, Head of Canadian Real Estate Development, Private Markets, Manulife Investment Management, is responsible for the strategic direction, planning, financial analysis, feasibility, entitlements, predevelopment, and execution phases of real estate developments across Canada for our investors and the Manulife general account, as well as a variety of third-party investors. The developments include Class A industrial warehouses, multifamily residential, premium office, and mixed-use retail, with a primary focus on multifamily and industrial. Prior to joining Manulife, Philip was with Cadillac Fairview, where he was responsible for execution of landmark real estate developments, including mixed-use residential, Class A office, and retail.

Paul Sprokay, Project Executive - Canadian Turner Construction Company, is an experienced Preconstruction Manager with a demonstrated history of working globally in the construction industry for more than twenty years. Skilled in Lean Construction, Pre-construction, Project Management, and Integrated Project Delivery in a wide range of markets, including aviation, healthcare, pharmaceutical, commercial, higher education, sports and assembly. Strong operations professional with a Bachelor of Applied Science - BASc focused in Civil Engineering from The University of British Columbia. 
Doug Flynn is the President and CEO of the Flynn Group of Companies, the North American industry leader related to the "Total Building Envelope." The company provides contracting services in the institutional, commercial, and industrial construction marketplace.

Doug began his career with Flynn Canada in 1982 working in the field in Western Canada. He advanced through the organization taking on roles in estimating, project management, and various other positions at the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan branch office. In 1991, Doug became the President and CEO when he and his family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba (head office at the time) to assume his new duties.

Doug has overseen the growth of the company and has witnessed its expansion from a regional roofing company in Western Canada with less than 100 employees to a total building envelope trade contractor with in excess of 6000 employees in 35 offices across North America.
Donald Schmitt is a well-known Canadian architect whose practice is built on the transformative power of design. As a principal of Diamond Schmitt Architects, he is committed to the design of architecture that transcends convention and enriches everyday life. He is passionate about functionality, innovation, elegance, and sustainability.

Don is the Founding Chair of the Public Art Commission for the City of Toronto for which he was awarded the Civic Medal and is currently a member of the University of Toronto Design Review Panel. He served on the Design Review Panel of the National Capital Commission for over a decade and for many years for Waterfront Toronto.

His recent designs include the transformation of the National Arts Centre and the Senate of Canada Building in Ottawa; the Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning at Sick Children’s Hospital; Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver; Lazaridis Hall at Wilfrid Laurier University; and the compact mixed-use, transit connected, pedestrian oriented SmartCentres Place in Vaughan, at 20 million square feet, one of North America’s ground breaking new urban neighbourhoods.

Donald Schmitt is a Member of the Order of Canada.
