A Chance To Breathe...
You Know They’re Going to Mess Up Sometimes

by Sarah Burtchell | September 14, 2020

They’re going to screw it up, you know.

Teens make mistakes

They’re going to gather up a friend or two or six and plow ahead with little thought into that frightening world of teenage behaviors and missteps and spontaneous, ill-advised adventures.

They’re going to participate in asinine, scary YouTube video challenges and post them to TikTok and cause teens to be intrigued, grownups to be frightened, and parents to question their intelligence and possibly even their character.

What do Tourette syndrome, heroin addiction and social media obsession all have in common? They converge in an area of the brain called the striatum, says neuroscientist Rachel Wurzman -- and this critical discovery could reshape our understanding of the opioid crisis.

Sharing insights from her research, Wurzman shows how social isolation contributes to relapse and overdose rates and reveals how meaningful human connection could offer a potentially powerful source of recovery.

This talk was presented to a local audience at TEDxMidAtlantic, an independent event. TED's editors chose to feature it for you.

This seems so simple, yet for so many of us it’s difficult. We can only do the best we can, no more. We learn and we grow and then with that new knowledge and awareness we can do better. It’s not a judgement of what we did before, it’s an awareness of what we can do now.
