Donelson Calls Out Developer-Backed Council Members, No Building Height Vote for You, Primary Election Results, and More!

Here are some of the stories we are following this week. Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for up-to-the-minute news.

  • Councilman Dave Donelson brought up a touchy topic at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. He asked 3 council members to recuse themselves from a future vote about the Arrowswest apartment development due to taking campaign contributions from the developer. Watch the video here. Should the council members recuse themselves? Email the council at allcouncil@coloradosprings.gov to share your thoughts!

  • Colorado Springs City Council heard a proposal to advance the downtown building height restrictions matter to a future council meeting and then rejected it on a 7-1 vote. Another meeting would have allowed citizens to give public testimony. Council members didn’t want that to happen. So, now we wait for the fallout from this decision.

  • The 36-floor apartment building development that kicked off all this talk about building height limits downtown will be reduced now to a mere 27 stories. But they didn’t do this out of concerns citizens raised. They did this because of funding trouble. Get ready for every other developer to want a tall building downtown too.

  • Colorado Springs City Council also heard arguments for and against the Arrowswest development. You may recall that this proposed apartment complex development is adjacent to the hotly-contested and ultimately rejected 2424 Garden of the Gods apartment complex development proposal. The City Council has decided to delay the vote until July 9.

  • Colorado Springs Mayor Mobolade has publicly addressed the reported rift between the Fire Chief and City Council. Fire Chief Royal reportedly didn’t appreciate the “tone” or “behavior” of Councilwoman Lynette Crow-Iverson. The mayor reports that all is well now.

  • Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade has been in office for a full year now. Our friends at the Colorado Springs Independent have a retrospective on the mayor’s first year as head of the city.

  • On a side note, we attempted to post the above article to Facebook, and it was twice labeled as spam. It appears that censorship season is upon us.

  • One Pueblo family plans to sue the Pueblo Police Department regarding a death that stemmed from a delayed police response to a reported stolen vehicle. Can responsibility for the overwhelming rise in crime we are seeing be more appropriately laid at the feet of the Colorado Legislature?

  • Also in news related to the Colorado Legislature coddling criminals, Denver will appropriate $3 million in taxpayer dollars to combat car theft at Denver International Airport. This funding will go toward, you guessed it, cameras. Not actual police making arrests. A whopping 723 cars were stolen from DIA in 2023. How much do you want to bet that every criminal who stole a car there is still roaming free and stealing more cars?

  • But wait, there’s more! Denver City Council has also approved a ballot measure for an increase in the sales tax there. This tax increase is intended to offset some of the catastrophic impacts on the city budget from their “sanctuary city” fiasco. Asking more from taxpayers is always the answer. Always.

  • Jeff Crank has won the primary election over Dave Williams. Mr. Crank is running to replace Doug Lamborn in Colorado’s 5th US Congressional District.

  • It’s looking like Bill Wysong is leading the tightly-contested race for El Paso County Commissioner District 3. Mr. Wysong has aggressively opposed some of the rampant development in our region.

  • A national organization made up of former gang members will be stationed at the Citadel Mall. This mall has been the site of quite a bit of gang violence lately. Do you think this will help the situation?

  • If you would like to help support us in our mission as government watchdogs by becoming a Newsletter Sponsor, we are offering two sponsorships for each weekly newsletter, at the nominal cost of $100 each. Funds raised from these sponsorship opportunities will help us to keep looking out for taxpayers.

Here are some upcoming meetings in the area. We hope you can attend one or more! If there are other public meetings you’d like to see announced here, please drop us a line. We are happy to include them in an upcoming newsletter. These might be government-related, candidate, or elected official meetings. Thanks!
