Our Monthly Luncheon for August will feature Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II. He is currently serving his 10th term representing Missouri’s Fifth Congressional District, home district of President Harry Truman. After serving 12 years on the City Council of Kansas City, he was elected as the city’s first African American Mayor in 1991. Many would describe Congressman Cleaver as an economic development activist.
In 2009, with a multitude of accomplishments both locally and Congressionally, Cleaver introduced a highly ambitious project – the creation of a Green Impact Zone, which has since received approximately $125 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment funds. The Green Impact Zone aims at making a high crime area the environmentally greenest piece of urban geography in the world. The project will rebuild Troost Avenue, fix bridges, curbs, and sidewalks, weatherize homes as well as add smart home technology to hundreds of homes, but most importantly, it will bring in several, severely needed jobs for Green Zone residents.
Congressman Cleaver is also a recipient of the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Foundation. Other past honorees include President Bill Clinton, the late Senator John McCain, and Justice Sandra Day O’Conner. The Texas native has made Kansas City his home with his wife, Dianne, their 4 children and now their grandchildren. Congressman Cleaver is not only passionate about positive change, but he has a true love for Kansas City, and we can’t wait to welcome him and enjoy his presentation. Join us on August 24th, 2023, for lunch, conversation, and connections. We will see you there!
