 "Weather or Not"
all-member show
Featuring:  Spotlight Wall artist Roddy Cole
Now through December 2
Th e artists of the Kittery Art Association present their newest all-member show, "Weather or Not", opening November 8 and on display until December 2. Come see how each artist interprets this theme of weather. Or not!
And, our member Roddy Cole has the Spotlight Wall upstairs, so you'll want to be sure to see this special presentation of a sampling of her work. From her bio: "I studied art for a few years in college and put my paints aside for 34 years. When our children approached college age I pulled out my paint box (decorated with an impressive array of hippie stickers) and voila, most of my oil paints were still very usable!..... Discovering my own style has been the most challenging work and I am excited to continue to grow my skills."

Bill Staines returns to the KAA November 23!

Bill Staines
Legendary folk singer-songwriter Bill Staines will perform at the Kittery Art Association on Friday evening, November 23rd, at 7:30pm. For over forty years, Staines has criss-crossed the United States singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concerts, clubs and coffeehouses.

A New England native, Staines became involved with the Boston-Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960's and, for a time, emceed the Sunday hootenanny at the renowned Club 47 in Cambridge. He quickly became a popular performer in the Boston area. In 1980 and 1981, the annual Reader's Poll of The Boston Globe selected him as a favorite performer.   Staines weaves a magical blend of wit and gentle humor into his performances, and his original music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon.

A number of Staines's songs have been recorded by other artists including, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Nanci Griffith, Jerry Jeff Walker, and others. He has recorded over twenty albums, and many of his songs have been published in songbooks, including  The Songs of Bill Staines and  All God's Critters Got A Place In The Choir . Radio and TV appearances have included  A Prairie Home Companion , M ountain Stage, The Good Evening Show and a host of local programs on PBS and network TV.

The KAA show opens at 7pm for conversation and refreshments. There is
a suggested donation of $15.00 at the door, and seating is limited.
8 Coleman Avenue. For information, call 207-451-9384.
Russian  Matryoshka Nested Doll Painting  for the whole family December 2 at KAA!!

Storytelling  and Hands-on Workshop  with  Marina Forbes, Russian Artist

Traditional Russian artist and lecturer, Marina Forbes, will offer a unique workshop on the rich Russian folk tradition of Matryoshka (wooden nested doll) painting. The workshop is scheduled at the Kittery Art Association, 8 Colman Ave., Kittery Point, ME on Saturday, December 2nd from 2 - 5pm and is open to adults, teens and  families with children 6 and up.

This is a great opportunity for adults and families to work together and learn about Russian crafts and culture. Participants will hear the story of the Matryoshka doll and will learn about her traditional Russian dress and customs. Traditional Russian painting techniques and floral and berry designs are also introduced. The goal is to produce a finished piece of Russian folk art on wood. Students can work on 7-piece, 5-piece, 3-piece or 1-piece matryoshka sets. Throughout the workshop, students will be listening to traditional Russian music, and, during a brief break from the painting, there will be a demonstration of a few steps from a traditional Russian "matryoshka dance."

To pre-register or for more information please contact Marina Forbes by phone, (603) 332-2255, or by e-mail   [email protected].

New Board of Trustees members Beth Newkirk and Jon Stryzmish already appear to be on the job!
Did you miss the ANNUAL MEETING?

If so, you missed a good time.  Members came together to share food and drink, to talk art and to laugh and take care of business.  Much gratitude was expressed to our hard-working volunteer board and members who give of their time and efforts to sustain and grow Kittery Art Association.

Things you should know:  Deborah Cotter's term as president has ended, although she will continue as a Trustee for 2019.  Leaving the Board are Dianne Dean and Betsy Wish, and we are VERY thankful they have both said they aren't going very far!  Coming on to the Board are members Beth Newkirk and Jon Strymish.

Jon is a lifelong bookseller, currently the buyer at Book and Bar in Portsmouth.  He has maintained a lifelong interest in classic black and white photography, and in his own photography says he likes to "steal as much of the vibe of older styles of jazz photography" as he can reasonably get away with.  Jon, a resident of South Berwick, is also deeply interested in live music.

Beth, who lives in Durham, you may know as the person who organized gallery sitters and volunteers for opening receptions during the artist drop-off days.  She is a retired elementary schoolteacher who set three goals for herself when she left the classroom:  "1.  Take better care of my health (isn't that everyone's goal?). 2. Volunteer in meaningful ways.  3.  Be a learner."  Of watercolor painting, Beth loves the "almost meditative nature of mixing colors and brushing paint on paper....the final product is less important to me than the act of painting."

Beach Pea Baking Co. Exhibit
Featuring KAA artist Rosalind Fedeli

Rosalind Fedeli will be exhibiting from Nov. 1 through the end of December.  Her work is mixed media, where she implements various found objects, fabric and paint in her work.

From the artist:  "These small paintings of Leaves and Foliage have all been created in the past year.....in primarily oil.  I enjoy the process of contemplating the shapes and textures; my parents were
landscape architects so it sort of comes as a natural subject.  I have recently moved to a small home/gallery/studio in York Village.  I am a prolific  artist, completely involved in my ever style  changing work."

Beach Pea Baking Co.  is located at 53 State Road in  Kittery, ME.

If you are interested in  having your artwork  displayed a t this  totally cool & hip little establishment  right here in Kittery, contact Betsy Wish at  [email protected] !    A very few slots are still available for 2019.

CALL TO ARTISTS!  KCC Art Show in Honor of Sarah Mildred Long Memorial Bridge
Exhibit Start Date:  Wednesday, January 9th, 2019, at 6 PM.

SMLbridge.BMoore

Stop the grumbling!  The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge was late, but it's here...and every time it saves you a few minutes getting from here to there, you should celebrate its completion!

With that in mind--in cooperation with the Visual Arts Committee at the Kittery Community Center--KAA member Bill Moore is helping to organize a night to honor the demise of the old Sarah Mildred Long Bridge and the arrival of the new structure with a special presentation in the STAR Theatre and an art show in the Morgan Gallery starting at 6 PM on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.

This event is open to the public, and you're invited!  And if you happen to have a photo or a painting of the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge you'd like to share, Bill would be happy to consider it.

We know this event is a long way off at this point, but much time is needed in order to carefully consider each photo and/or artwork submitted.

In any case, if you're interested in having your photos or artwork included in this special presentation, please contact Bill Moore at [email protected].  Do it now!
KAA Member Marina Forbes Offers
"The Art of Icon Painting"

Russian icon maker, teacher and lecturer, Marina Forbes, will offer "The Art of Icon Painting"   workshop  in Portsmouth at St. John's Episcopal Church (101 Chapel St, Portsmouth, NH 03801)  on Saturdays: November 10, 17, December 1 from 10am to 1pm and Sunday, December 9 from 2pm to 5pm. It is a hands-on  four 3-hour sessions studio workshop for students interested in learning how to create traditional Russian icons, one of the world's oldest and most respected forms of religious art. The program will include a detailed discussion and demonstration of traditional materials and methods of icon making. Students will learn about board and painting surface preparation, gessoing, image rendering, pigments, brush strokes techniques, detailing, highlighting, gilding, Old Slavonic lettering, and varnishing.

No painting experience is required for my Icon Painting class. Experienced artists will also feel very comfortable in my workshop.
