It may just be the two of us, or perhaps a few at a time. | | |
As we prepare to host Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche and Lama Lorraine in September, there’s much to do around Dorje Ling. With the exterior now refreshed in bright new colors (thanks to Matthew and Mark!), it’s time to bring that same care and attention indoors, making the space warm and welcoming for our guests.
If you’re able to lend a hand, please reach out to me by phone, email, or in person to coordinate. We can discuss what needs to be done, and what you might like doing, and set a date for a two-hour shift. Every bit of help is truly appreciated.
I have really enjoyed working one-on-one with Linda Jo, Wei, and Dallen, as well as in small groups with DeChen, Ali, and others over the past two weeks—thank you all.
Please phone or text me, 541-324-3200, or send an email dorjelingpdx@gmail.com
Thank you already! Carolyn
| | Engaged Buddhism: An Update | | |
On Saturday, July 12, a lovely array of groups and temples gathered for the annual Portland Buddhist Festival, this year hosted by Dharma Rain Zen Center. Sangha members sat at the Dorje Ling table, rotating throughout the day, meeting folks and greeting old friends. There was also time, in this relaxed atmosphere, to talk among ourselves about how Dorje Ling might better serve our own sangha, and to visit other booths, and attend scheduled workshops. As Matthew affirmed, it was a great opportunity to connect with other Buddhists in our vibrant and diverse dharma community.
A late break-out session, “Engaged Buddhism, a multi-sangha discussion,” filled up a room, with more and more chairs needed. One short hour, but email addresses were gathered, and out of that discussion a local coalition of engaged Buddhists is arising. A first zoom meeting happened on July 27, and an in-person meeting is scheduled on August 17, from 3:30-5:00 pm, at the Holgate Public Library.
Readers of our newsletter might also want to know that nationally, the Buddhist Coalition for Democracy started in the spring, and is rapidly growing. They have a website, committees, a blog newsletter, and so on. Their blog has featured various excellent articles, here is just one: https://www.buddhistcoalitionfordemocracy.org/compassion-and-interbeing/
The BCD has scheduled “A Mindful Town Hall” on Wednesday, August 6. Info and registration here: https://lu.ma/m04j962h
