Social Media
Our previous Facebook account has been retired at last, almost five years after the passing of Jampal Gyatso (Clark was the "owner" of the account!) We now have a new Facebook page with the same name and a connected Instagram account. Please follow our new pages for updates, news, and upcoming events.

Parking
Please feel free to park in the Dorje Ling parking lot. Although there are only a few spots, everyone is welcome to park there.
Food Drive
Please save the flyer, and donate items listed there. The Latino families we serve prefer these items, and to make our pantries do-able, we need to limit the options to these basics. For instance, they much prefer dried beans rather than canned! Other food pantries and free food sites serve the wider community, and they are all in great need of our support.
Also, our project is always in need of cash donations (via the Venmo link on the flyer or cash left in a labeled envelope). These funds allow us to purchase milk, eggs, meat, and the fresh fruits and vegetables which supplement our pantry staples in every delivery to families.
Thank you so much for your ongoing support. We are helping more and more households directly impacted by ICE, and the concern and generosity of donors is making this all possible. Muchas gracias.

A Year in Review
2025, The Year of the Wood Snake
| |
By Carolyn Myers
2025 was the Tibetan Year of the Wood Snake (Losar 2152). In Tibetan astrology, the Snake is associated with wisdom, intuition, and quiet transformation, while the Wood element brings growth—inviting renewal without forcing it. Together, they describe a year that favors thoughtful beginnings, patient tending, and change that unfolds from deep roots.
For Dorje Ling, this feels like the year we lived. We grew in attendance and solidified a core group at all our regular events. We planned with care, and we received many generous gifts of time, energy, and resources. As a community and as a spiritual home, many of us found ourselves deepening in practice—and expanding our shared sense of what it means to tend this center together.
The highlight of our year was the visit of Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche. Over three days, Rinpoche bestowed three empowerments and led a Refuge ceremony. Each evening was full to capacity, and the atmosphere was joyful, devoted, and harmonious. Dorje Ling itself shone: the grounds were beautiful, the house warm and welcoming, and the meals fabulous. Before departing, while enjoying plums from the ancient plum tree, Rinpoche recalled Clark (Jampal Gyatso) and remarked how pleased Clark would be to see the continued flourishing of his center today.
This visit was made possible through generous cooperation with Kagyu Changchub Chöling, where the empowerments were held, and through the guidance of Shashi and Ila Reitz of Tashi Chöling, who supported ritual organization and lama care. By karmic coincidence, three students of Khenpo have since moved to the Pacific Northwest and become active members of our sangha.
Many other gifts came to us this year. We received black stone plaques bearing an image of Guru Rinpoche and a prayer for averting obstacles—distributed throughout the United States through the efforts of a visionary benefactor. These plaques now grace our grounds and support our monthly Riwo Sang Chöd smoke offering, which continues to grow in participation both here and worldwide.

Our connections with Gyatrul Rinpoche’s other centers also deepened. Members attended retreats at Tashi Chöling and celebrations at Orgyen Dorje Den, both in person and on Zoom. We also participated in the creation of a magnificent stupa honoring Gyatrul Rinpoche at Tashi Chöling by making tsa tsas to place within it.
Beyond our walls, Dorje Ling took part in the Portland Buddhist Festival at Dharma Rain Zen Center, renewing connections with local sanghas. Inspired by teachings on Engaged Buddhism, members also joined a Buddhist Coalition at the No More Kings marches. In response to local hardship related to ICE activity in Portland, one of our sangha members has been leading a food drive to support local pantries, with donations now being received at the center.
At home, Dorje Ling received a great deal of visible love. Mat Small, with help from Mark Fry, transformed the exterior with bold new colors—bright orange, yellow, and touches of turquoise—while Dallen Esselstrom restored the greenhouse to its role as a welcoming tea room.
Our regular offerings continue to flourish: Sunday Ngöndro (including a teaching series by Mat Small), lunar pujas supported by Amber Crane’s beautiful chöpon offerings, the book study group led by Beverly Daggett, and the Wednesday night meditation class. We also began monthly, in-person-only practices of Troma and Vajrakīlaya. Two annual events are now firmly established: the Fall Meditation Weekend and the Jampal Gyatso Memorial, honoring Clark Hansen, whose devotion sustained Dorje Ling for so many years.

Before closing, we wish to honor Kelsang Dolma (pictured right), whose generosity and devotion continue to bless our center in countless ways—from sacred objects and hospitality to community outreach and support of other centers. Dolma is currently recovering from a serious fall. And although she is rebounding with strength and positivity, please keep her in your prayers and reach out to share your love.

So—what a year. Happy Losar, and welcome to the Year of the Fire Horse! May we continue, together, to care for this precious center.
As Ven. Gyatrul Rinpoche reminds us:
| | | |
“These dharma centers are my tulkus. Please stand up and take care of them! If you do, it is certain that through the blessings of the gurus, the dharma will flourish." | | | Regular Events at Dorje Ling | | |

"You must first practice hearing the Dharma, then contemplating it, then meditating upon it. If you don’t learn the Dharma first, then on what will you meditate? It will help you accomplish your own benefit and the benefits of others—in this life and future lives."

Bring your compassionate mindset and join us in the chants–or simply rest in a state of prayer or meditation during the session.
