Guru Rinpoche Stone Plaques

Dorje Ling recently received three beautiful black stone plaques as a gift from two local Buddhist practitioners. These stones have a detailed image of Guru Rinpoche on one side and a prayer for averting obstacles on the back. You may have noticed that one was recently placed in the raised bed at the gate entry to Dorje Ling.

These stone plaques were distributed in 2024 to Buddhist communities and to individual practitioners throughout the United States. They were sent from Katog Rit’hröd (Katog Choling’s Mountain Retreat Center in Arkansas) to help avert calamities and obstacles which were described in ancient prophecies. The center's founder and spiritual director, Khentrul Lodrö T'hayé Rinpoche, has visited Dorje Ling in the past and given teachings in Portland. Several sangha members count him as their main teacher, and our book group and meditation class have both studied his excellent book, The Power of Mind.

Venerarable Gyatrul Rinpoche did not speak often about prophecies. But he did offer advice about degenerate times and how to protect ourselves and others. We can all heed his advice to help avert calamities and encourage compassionate action, at any time:

“If you want protection from the dangers of these negative times, or if you want protection from negative spirits or your own negative karma, the way to protect yourself is to turn away from your attachment and aversion, to lessen them. Doing practices like [the] Mani mantra or Vajrasattva mantra are the direct antidote to your attachment and aversion. That is the very best protection. This is how each of us has to protect ourselves. So as much as you can, please do this.” -Ven. Gyatrul Rinpoche, 2015

The plaques originated at the Katog monastery in Eastern Tibet (China). A Chinese sponsor, associated with the monastery, generously commissioned these composite stones which are made from actual crushed stone, relics, and many blessed substances including fabrics, precious metals, and jewels. Please click the link to read more.

"'May all beings be freed from their suffering of feeling so separate from their buddhanature.' With that as your compassionate intention, then if you offer one butter lamp or one flower or one cookie at tsog, then how extraordinary is that offering."

TLC: Transitional Life Care

Saturday, February 15, 2025

10:00-1:00 p.m. PST on Zoom

How can we prepare for death in a culture that doesn’t lend itself to acknowledging mortality? How is it that grief, in all its forms, can inform with clarity how we choose to live right now?

Dr. Dawn Gross, hospice and palliative medicine physician and creator and host of ‘Dying To Talk’ radio, is leading a paradigm shift in how we talk about death and listen to grief. At the heart of both is a practice of curiosity. The words we choose impact our actions. Creating a community conversation centered on curiosity creates space for conversations about what matters most to occur.

Join Dr. Dawn and TLC as we discover what we are dying to talk about in a way that compels us to be living to listen.
