We’ve officially begun scheduling our dormant prunes! This is the best time of year to prune specific species, including:
American Elm, Apple, Apricot, Crabapple, Cherry, Hawthorn, Peach, Pear, Plum, and Red Oak.
If you’ve already authorized your dormant pruning, our team will be in touch within the next few weeks to schedule your service. If not, now’s the perfect time to authorize. We’re currently booking about 8 weeks out from authorization.
If you have scheduling flexibility, ask about our “Will-Call” list. If our crews finish early, we’ll send them out to your property and give you a heads up call.
What Is Dormant Pruning and Why It Matters
Dormant pruning is the practice of pruning trees and shrubs during the winter months, after they’ve entered dormancy — typically once leaves have fallen and growth has stopped. During this time, the tree is in a state of rest, conserving energy until spring.
Why We Prune During Dormancy
Pruning during dormancy offers several key benefits:
- Healthier Regrowth: Without active growth, the tree can heal pruning cuts before new buds form, promoting stronger, healthier branches in spring.
- Better Visibility: With no leaves, we can clearly see the structure of the tree, making it easier to remove crossing branches, deadwood, and poor growth patterns.
- Reduced Stress and Disease Risk: Because sap isn’t flowing and insect activity is low, pruning wounds are less likely to attract pests or spread disease.
Why We Wait for Fruiting Trees to Go Dormant
For fruiting trees it’s especially important to wait until they’re fully dormant before pruning.
If pruned too early (while the tree is still active and its warm), the cuts can:
- Make the tree more susceptible to winter injury or disease like fireblight
- Reduce fruit production for the following season.

| Dormant Oils & Antidesiccant | | |
Our PHC team is focused on dormant oil applications this month. These treatments target scales, aphids, and mites, pests that thrive in the unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve been experiencing. Dormant oil is organic and safe for your landscape, offering effective protection without harsh chemicals.
|
|
Antidesiccants
In addition, we highly recommend antidesiccant (AD) treatments to help your evergreen and conifer trees retain moisture through the dry Colorado winter. Since our region often sees limited snowfall and low humidity, trees can lose more water than they take in. AD treatments form a protective layer that reduces moisture loss, helping your trees stay healthy and hydrated until spring.

Lawn Mites
Winter lawn mites are one of Colorado’s most destructive yet preventable turf pests. Common species like clover mites and bank grass mites thrive in our dry, sunny winter conditions, feeding on grass blades and roots. They’re most active from November through March, especially on south- and west-facing lawns, near rocks, or under evergreens where the ground stays warm and dry.
Because they feed while grass is dormant, damage often isn’t visible until spring, when large brown patches appear that fail to green up. By then, the turf is often dead and may need reseeding or sod replacement.
Preventive treatment is the most effective defense. A winter mite control application protects your lawn before populations build up, saving you time and costly repairs later. Regular winter watering in exposed areas also helps, since mites thrive in dry soil.
Even if you don’t think you have mites, we recommend treating proactively, It’s affordable and highly effective. Protect your investment now for a healthy, green lawn next year.
