Dorothy Gillespie Artwork on Display in Galleries 1946-2020

Dear Friends,

Yesterday I visited the SOBO Art Gallery in Winter Garden Fl, just outside Orlando to drop off some of my mother's art. Last Winter before the Pandemic I loaned art from the Dorothy M. Gillespie Foundation to be displayed in the SOBO Gallery. (See last three photos).

During my mother's lifetime she had over 150 group and solo exhibitions in galleries from coast to coast.

In 1945, after only two years in NYC, and at 25 years of age, my mother was invited by the Cherry Lane Theatre's Director Al Hurwitz to have a one-woman exhibition of her paintings at the Cherry Lane Theatre. Although the theatre was not a gallery it marked my mother's first solo exhibition in NYC.

She described those paintings, whose whereabouts are now unknown, "as baroque compositions dominated by gargoyle-like images painted in intense colors applied heavily with brush and palette knife".

In 1946, recently married to my father, my mother displayed her paintings in the Salle de Champagne a cabaret nightclub that my parents owned in Greenwich Village in NYC from 1946 until our family moved to Peru in 1951.

Shortly after my mother passed away, Bill Meek, the owner of the Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples, Florida, had a Dorothy Gillespie Memorial Exhibition. (See photos below).

I am pleased to announce that in January 2021 the Wilma W. Daniels Gallery at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington North Carolina will have the Dorothy Gillespie Traveling Collection - a solo-exhibition which will be on loan from Radford University.
