I am pleased to announce that the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University will present a major retrospective exhibition Dorothy Gillespie: Works from the Radford University Collection this month, March 19-November, 2022. (See photos below)
The original museum, known as the Buscaglia-Castellani Gallery, was built in 1978 and was located off campus. The following year my mother had an exhibition at the gallery.
In 1990, the museum was renamed the Castellani Art Museum and a new building was constructed on campus.
On the occasion of the dedication of the Castellani Art Museum in 1990, Niagara University recognized my mother by bestowing on her, honoris causa, the degree Doctor of Pedagogy (Education).
President Brian J. O'Connell, in presenting my mother with the honorary doctorate, said, on Sept 22, 1990: "The word 'artist' is inadequate in capturing the full dimension of Dorothy Gillespie's life and career and leaves unmentioned just as many diverse and far-reaching events to which she has also given her time, energy and ideas.
'Writer', 'educator' and 'lecturer' are words which more fully help to define this multifaceted woman who has managed to combine career, family, community and writing; she has lectured at more than 40 colleges, universities and museums across the country. Niagara University students have been privileged to hear her on several occasions".
In 2020, on the 30th anniversary of my mother receiving her Honorary Doctorate, the Dorothy M. Gillespie Foundation established an Art Scholarship for a female student at Niagara University majoring in Art History in Museum Studies. At the May 5th reception, I will award the inaugural scholarship to Tailor Choquette, a junior in the program.
