Volunteer Spotlight-- Meet Jan Keese!

Volunteering at Dorothy's House has been such a joy! I had heard Kellie speak and decided when I retired from teaching I wanted to pursue this volunteer opportunity. It is so special working with everyone there-- and we found a way to match that with our passion for reading. We have created a Book Club where we choose a book to read, set a time to meet in a variety of locations and have great discussions! It adds so much to hear each person's thoughts on the book. We even connected one of our books to the author speaking at the Des Moines Public Library!

I look forward to continuing this experience. This place is truly a blessing regardless of your role there! Thanks for the opportunity to volunteer!

Easter Abundance
Melissa J and her friends got together to provide Easter baskets for our participants. Each basket included a movie on DVD and by complete chance-- each movie spoke to each participant in such a beautiful way. We try to operate on the concept of abundance (love, forgiveness, compassion, food, wellness) at all times and the surprise and delight that resulted from these gifts left everyone feeling cared for.

The team who put these gifts together for us doesn't get to experience the joy they brought, but be assured that it gave back an experience to a group of young ladies that was missed in childhood.
Gridshock

Dorothy's House was given the privilege of hosting the world premiere of the documentary Gridshock at the Civic Center on Tuesday, April 2nd. It was a night filled with friends to celebrate how far we've come in building awareness for the issue of sex trafficking in Iowa and to continue on that dialogue .

If you missed the event here is a list of future showings.

You can also contact Vanessa McNeal schedule hosting your own event. Send a note to mcnealmedia@gmail.com
THANKS!
Amy organized a full day of volunteers with the kids in the STEP ( Secondary Transition Employment Program) from Des Moines Public Schools. We pulled weeds, raked leaves, and generally cleaned up for spring.

Val and Bonnie from Faithful Envoy for helping plant our gardens this year. We got almost 500 asparagus sprouts in the ground. They also brought the youth group from their church to help with some yard work.

100+ Men -- Mike and the guys all showed up to improve our chicken coop so our outside girls are as happy as our inside girls. We spent a 1/2 day building a new enclosure. Cal came back to help get our run back in place.. now only if the chickens could find the new doors.
