The Gin Game

A Staged Reading By D.L. Coburn

Directed by Josh Bond, Produced by Paul Michael Brinker, Presenting Sponsor: Kitchens of Vermont.

This winner of the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which originally starred Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn and was later revived with Julie Harris and Charles Durning, uses a card game as a metaphor for life. Weller Martin is playing solitaire on the porch of a seedy nursing home. Enter Fonsia Dorsey, a prim, self-righteous lady. They discover they both dislike the home and enjoy gin rummy, so they begin to play and to reveal intimate details of their lives. Fonsia wins every time, and their secrets become weapons used against one another. Weller longs for a victory to counter a lifetime of defeats, but it doesn’t happen. He leaves the stage a broken man, and Fonsia realizes her self-righteous rigidity has led to an embittered, lonely, old age.

Staged reading dates & times are March 13, 2026 at 7:30PM and March 15, 2026 at 2PM.

Circle of Readers

The Circle of Readers will meet the Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at 6:30. We will be reading The Waverly Gallery by Kenneth Lonergan.

This is considered a “memory play”, being told through Daniel, a grandson following his grandmother’s battle with memory decline. His grandmother owns a small art gallery in Greenwich Village, and the landlord wants to evict the gallery and put in a restaurant. How her family, daughter Ellen, son-in-law Howard and grandson deal with her decline makes for a play with love, humor and shows how a family works together to support a loved one facing a battle with one’s own mind.

Please let us know if you plan to come to the Circle of Readers, March 10, 2026 at the Dorset Playhouse.

Thank you!
