Community Theatre At Its Best

Our 98th Season is Here!

Vermont Reads 2025

The Light Pirate

The Dorset Players will be performing a Staged Reading on Friday, November 14th at 6:30 pm at the Dorset Playhouse and Saturday, November 15th at 2:00 pm at the Manchester Community Library.

This novel opens with a storm—a devastating hurricane—and the birth of a baby girl named Wanda. Her arrival marks the beginning of a powerful journey set against the backdrop of Florida’s slow, inevitable collapse.

As the seas rise and infrastructure disappears, Wanda’s world is redefined. Raised in isolation and shaped by loss, she grows into a woman deeply connected to the earth and what remains of her community. The book is divided into four parts—Power, Water, Light, and Time—each one marking a new phase in her life and in the world around her.

But The Light Pirate is so much more than a climate crisis narrative. It’s a meditation on resilience, connection, and what it means to evolve in a world that’s crumbling beneath your feet. From a review by Jen Hatmaker

Come hear members of the Dorset Players and participants from surrounding communities bring this novel to life. Read by Joanne Beck, Evelyn Bond, Sandra Gartner, Kathy Malley, Lynne Marcus, Jon Mathewson, Becky Nawrath, Martha Jo Perkins, Carolyn Stellatella, and Trish Weisbrot. This production is sponsored by the Vermont Humanities as part of their 2025 VT Reads program. It is produced and directed by Maureen Chaffee.

Join Paul Michael Brinker on Wednesday, November 5

at 9am for coffee, homemade muffins and what's happening at the Dorset Playhouse.

Circle of Readers

The Circle of Readers meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Dorset Playhouse. The next meeting will be on Tuesday November 11 at 6:30 to explore the script of Inherit the Wind.

Inherit the Wind is a fictionalized account of the Scopes Trial, a legal case brought against John Scopes, who was accused of violating a law that prohibited the teaching of human evolution in a Tennessee public school. As the story unfolds in the courtroom and through the voices of the townspeople, a central message becomes clear. It is one that supports the right to question the status quo, to think freely and to reach one's own conclusions without fear of suppression.

Scripts will be provided. Questions or attendance confirmation, please contact Cheryl Gushee @ 802-379-1031 or Dorset Players' business office at 802-867-5570.

Planning Our Ninety-Ninth and One Hundredth Seasons Meeting

It is time to plan the next season and while we are at it, let’s plan two!

A meeting will be held on December 9 at 6pm at the Dorset Playhouse for submissions by directors for the the coming seasons.

Executive Producers, Paul Michael Brinker & Elisabeth Hazelton will accept submissions for the next two seasons and hear directors’ ideas of what they would like to bring to the Dorset Playhouse stage. We are looking for musicals, comedies, dramas, kids shows, special events, staged readings and whatever else you can think of throwing our theatrical way. Please bring a script of what you would like to submit so our committee can get to work on planning without delay. If you cannot make the meeting, please contact Paul Michael in the Business Office (802-867-5570 or info@dorsetplayers.org) to make your submissions.
