Direct Mailers Go Out to SNAP Households in September!

We are very excited to announce that Double Up flyers will be mailed to SNAP households in zip codes within 10 to 20 miles of each Pinnacle Prevention Double Up Food Bucks Arizona participating location in early September!

This amazing opportunity would not be possible without our partners at the Arizona Nutrition Network, Arizona Department of Health Services and Department of Economic Security

We'll be following up with all sites once the flyers are in the mail, so you can prepare for the increase in new SNAP customers. We want new customers to have the most positive shopping experience possible, so please be sure you have enough signage and other communication resources on hand. Let us know if you need anything to help make this promotional strategy a success!

More About Monthly SNAP Sales:

Many of you have noticed that there are fewer SNAP customers and sales during the last two weeks of each month. This has to do with the way SNAP benefits are distributed. SNAP participants receive their monthly benefits on their EBT Quest Card based on the first letter of their last name, starting on the 1st of each month through the 13th day of each month. Since SNAP represents only about $1 of supplemental assistance per person, per meal, it is no surprise that many families have already used most of their benefits by the end of the month.

Double Up Token Redemption Rates:

Double Up token redemption rates by market range from about 50% to over 100%. This means that some customers and/or vendors are using tokens from one market at other markets. This is expected, and we want to encourage customers to spend their Double Up at any participating market.

On the flip side, we want to encourage vendors to turn in all their Double Up Food Bucks tokens at the end of the market, or at the first opportunity available per market practices. If you would like to improve your redemption rates, consider asking SNAP customers some of the following questions:
  • How easy is it for you to spend Double Up tokens at the market?
  • Do you plan to spend all of your tokens today? If not, why not?
  • When do you plan to be back to spend your tokens?
  • Is there anything that would make it easier for you to spend your tokens?
Pinnacle Prevention is Now Accepting Applications for New Double Up Partners

Pinnacle Prevention will be holding two open application processes for new Double Up Food Bucks Partners - one in the Summer and one in the Winter. Our Summer application process is currently open through Friday, September 15th.

Please see our application here and spread the news to any farmers markets or growers who are interested in offering Double Up Food Bucks. We recommend that sites have previous experience accepting SNAP at their location(s) before implementing Double Up. Any questions should be directed to Kate O'Neill at kateoneill@pinnacleprevention.org.

How Can Current Partners Offer Double Up at New Sites?

Current Double Up Food Bucks Partners who are interested in expanding to new locations should contact Kate O'Neill for a New Site Application. As we continue to grow the program, we need to be very thoughtful about how the funding is allocated, as well as how the incentives are distributed across the state.

We will continue to work hard to ensure that as many markets and SNAP customers have access to Double Up Food Bucks Arizona as possible. A few things that we may take in to consideration when reviewing new site proposals include potential SNAP reach, FNS SNAP Permit or Application status for the new site (only relevant for Farmers Markets), current redemption rates, and eligible product availability.

Share your stories for the American Farmland Trust's Farmers Market Celebration

Over the next few months, Double Up Food Bucks Arizona is highlighting our incredible markets and growers as part of the American Farmland Trust's Farmers Market Celebration.

By answering a few short questions, you can help us elevate and share your important efforts. So far, we've highlighted markets that go above and beyond when it comes to supporting family farmers and bringing healthy food to all Arizonans.

This month, we're highlighting markets that act as pillars of their communities. If your market celebrates the uniqueness of your hometown or is a central gathering place, we want to share your stories! Keep an eye out for an email with our questions, or email Stacey using the subject line "Healthy Food for All." We will feature your responses on our blog and social media channels.

Check out our latest blogs to read more about markets we've highlighted for the celebration so far:

Keep an eye out for our blog next week featuring the Authentically Ajo Farmers Market and the Nogales Mercado Farmers Market!
