EMPOWERING EDUCATION:
A FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE
| |
|
Empowering children to flourish by providing a holistic education, complete nutrition, and a supportive community.
| |
Did you know that 100% of the children in our community have barriers that make attending school on a regular basis difficult, or even impossible?
|
We are excited to kick off the month of May by announcing that we have a $100,000 matching grant to support our education program!
This means that your donations will be doubled, dollar for dollar, making your contribution go even further in supporting the holistic education and resources our program provides.
| |
|
Throughout the month of May, with your help, our goal is to raise $100,000 (which is really $200,000 when matched). The funds will be used to support our efforts to get every child in our community educated. With this match, every dollar will go that much further!
But we can't do it without your help. Will you consider partnering with us in these efforts? Education is a fundamental right that every child deserves.

WHY DOES EDUCATION MATTER?
| |
Education is the foundation upon which life is built. Whether it's basic skills like letters and numbers, or relationship development such as learning how to get along with and work with others. Having access to education provides the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in life.
When children aren't in school, their learning is hampered –– and without a solid educational foundation, they may struggle to gain meaningful employment, provide for their families, and contribute to their communities. This can perpetuate a cycle of poverty, marginalization, and social exclusion.
Our education program not only focuses on meeting educational gaps, but it goes well beyond. We teach children about understanding their emotions, presentation skills, teamwork and so much more. We expand our student's horizons by focusing on topics such as the solar system and the world around them while incorporating hands-on learning and opportunities for deeper understanding.

51% of teens in MdC's community are not enrolled in school. |
Teenagers from marginalized communities are often forced to prioritize work or caring for siblings over school, limiting their opportunities for personal and academic growth.
We have to change this! These adolescents are missing their childhood and we have to do something about it.
| |
Advocacy is an important component of MdC's work. Many families in our community need our assistance to help get their children enrolled in school. Our mutual goal is to have students enrolled in the public school system while also attending MdC's educational program to supplement and reinforce their studies.
Sadly, sometimes the barriers to attending school are insurmountable. Schools don't have adequate space, they are too far, or a child is too far behind for their appropriate grade level and the school will not accept them. For many, it is the mandatory school fees that prevent their children from attending school. All of these and more are barriers to a public school education.
For many students where public school is not an option, MdC may be the only education their child will receive.
| |
Did you know that it only costs $7 per day or $2,555 per year to educate a child in our program?
At just $7 a day, your donation can make a significant impact on the life of a child in our education program. This small amount can provide a child with a quality education, including access to school supplies, a daily meal, and other necessary resources. By investing in their education, you're investing in their future.
For many families at the border, getting to school poses a significant challenge.
Students need to care for siblings before they can tend to their own schooling. Many have to walk long distances to get to school and they often face dangerous/unsafe conditions.
Some public schools are located more than an hour's walk in each direction. This makes it difficult for children to attend school regularly and can impact their education and overall well-being.
| |
In addition to the obstacles of transportation, many children have to carry their classroom supplies long distances: This can include things like heavy textbooks, notebooks, and required school supplies such as the mops and brooms that you see pictured here.
Carrying these supplies long distances, especially in the hot sun, can be physically and mentally exhausting, leaving children feeling tired and drained before school even starts.
One day we have a dream to have an MdC school bus!! Imagine!!

EDUCATION NEWS AND UPDATES
| |
Family Participation
We believe that education is a collaborative effort that involves not just students, but also their families.
This is why our education program has recently been inviting mothers to participate in classroom activities. Some mom's have read stories to the class while others have provided more interactive presentations.
Several mom's got together and during our Spirit Week, they organized fun activities for the students.
Involving mothers in their children's education increases engagement, develops stronger family bonds and creates a sense of community within the classroom.
| |
Anti-Bullying
In addition to academic support, we also prioritize teaching life skills and social-emotional learning to help our students succeed both in and out of the classroom.
To build awareness and teach our students how to care for one another, we brought in a professional to help our students identify the patterns and behaviors of bullying.
To reinforce that learning, every morning, students are greeted with a list of positive adjectives that highlight the strengths and qualities of their peers. Students are encouraged to greet each other using the positive examples on the board, promoting kindness and empathy.

Spirit Week
Last week our talented teachers orchestrated a weeklong program that combined both fun and hands on learning. Kids had a blast and learned!
Our chef's, pictured here, combined art and food to create masterpieces that they could eat.
Other students learned about the lifecycle of plants. and then applied their learning by plating our very first MdC garden.
While they were learning, each day had a fun dress code. Crazy hair day, cowboy dress code and sports theme allowed the students the freedom to add their own personal flair to each day.
We teach that learning is fun!
