Applying Grief-Informed Practices in Your Daily Life

There are as many ways to grieve as there are people in the world. One way we can build grief-informed practices into our daily lives is through honoring the lived experience of others. It’s important to know how to support others, even when their lived experience and grieving responses differ from our own. When we place expectations and judgments on others because they are different from us, it can create barriers rather than relational connection and perceived support. Honoring the lived experience of others involves offering the gift of nonjudgmental listening, open-mindedness, and support.

Labeling people who are grieving with “mental disorders” like Prolonged Grief Disorder, Complicated Grief, or Dysfunctional Grief, has its proponents and critics. In this webinar, we’ll take a brief but critical look at the movement and evidence for pathologizing grief, some of the implications of doing so, and why this matters.

It's Complicated: Grief and Estranged Relationships

March 6, 2025

10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., PST

presented by Jana DeCristofaro, L.C.S.W.

When someone dies, it is not uncommon for people to assume that our relationship with the person (or people) was a positive one. Navigating grief after the death of someone in our lives can be inherently complex, because relationships are complex. Just like grief, there can be complicating factors that make a loss even more challenging — especially if mental health issues, abuse, substance use, unresolved conflict, or estrangement were involved. Join us in this webinar where we will discuss the challenges people face when grieving the death of someone with whom they had a complex and complicated relationship.

Inclusivity, Intersectionality, and Grief

April 10, 2025

10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., PST

presented by Cristina Chipriano, L.C.S.W.-S., F.T.

Grief is contextual — it is influenced and impacted by personal and social factors. Identity is multifaceted and this intersectionality can create complex encounters or paradoxical experiences for people when they are grieving. Join us in this webinar where we will explore inclusive practices to support people who are grieving and the multifaceted layers that can impact grief.
