From the Principal's Office
Dowell Parents -

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a wonderful break and enjoyed time with family and friends. We have had a wonderful start to our second semester this week. Teachers have been meeting with administrators, counselors, and instructional support staff to discuss student growth during the first semester. The conversations have helped us to be more specific with students learning and to ensure that every child is growing. Thank you for partnering with us to help your child succeed.

Stay warm and have a great weekend!

Counselor's Corner - Time for High School Registration

The counselors will meet with the 8th graders next week to talk about high school registration and 4-year plans. Course descriptions and requirements can be found in the Academic Planning Guide located on the McKinney ISD website under the Parents and Students links. This document provides information for all courses offered on each high school campus. We also have a parent meeting scheduled for January 11th at 5:30PM at Dowell Middle School with the high school counselors so that they can go into more detail with parents about the registration process and answer any questions parents may have at this time.

We look forward to seeing you there!!

A cetaminophen Information

Acetaminophen is found in more than 600 different prescription and over-the-counter medicines. It is the most common drug ingredient in America. When you take acetaminophen as directed, it is safe and effective. But there is a limit to how much you can take in one day. Taking more than directed can lead to liver damage. Follow these steps to help you take this medication safely:
  • Always read and follow the label before taking any medicine. Never take more than the label says.

  • Know if your medicines contain acetaminophen so you can avoid taking too much.
    1) Over-the counter medications will list acetaminophen as an active ingredient.

    2) For prescription medication, look for the word "acetaminophen" or a shorter version such as "APAP" or "acetam" on the label.
  • Never take two medicines that contain acetaminophen at the same time.
Spinal Screening

Spinal screening on all eighth grade students will be conducted at Dowell beginning the week of November 7, 2016 and will continue through the end of January 2017. The purpose of this screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. The procedure for screening is simple. Screening will be conducted during a specific time agreed upon by the teacher and campus nurse. Your child's back will be examined while he/she stands and then bends forward. Boys and girls will be screened separately. Boys will wear their pants or gym shorts and only remove their shirts. Girls are requested to wear a halter-top or a two-piece swimsuit. Parents will be notified of the results of the screening, only if professional follow-up is necessary. This screening procedure does not replace your child's need for regular health care and checkups. According to Texas law, these screenings must be conducted. In order for your child to be exempt from screening, you must present an exam form from a physician or notarized religious conflict affidavit prior to the screening date.
