From the Principal's Office
Dowell Families -

What a great week we have had at Dowell. Our 6th graders traveled to downtown Dallas for their field trip to the 6th Floor Museum, Holocaust Museum, and Children's Museum. I love hearing all of the connections our students are making to what they have learned in the classroom. Thank you to all of the parents who were able to attend and help chaperone. Next Friday our 6th graders will get to be part of an exciting day when the employees of Raytheon come to work with them about science concepts. Our basketball season will wrap up next week with our end of the season playoff games and "A" team tournament. We will also honor some of our art students who have art on display at central office next Thursday evening. We hope that you can join us for some of the great things that are going on at Dowell. Please make sure that you have our dates for our Parent Registration Meetings (Feb.23) and Open House (Feb. 27) on your calendar. I will be giving out more details next week about both events.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

From the Nurse's Office

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. High blood pressure (HBP), sometimes called hypertension, happens when this force is too high. Anyone can develop high blood pressure; however, some factors increase your chances of developing this disease.

Risk factors that you can control include:
  • Overweight/Obesity
  • Increased salt intake
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Increased alcohol intake
  • Stress
Risks factors you cannot control include:
  • Age (blood pressure tends to rise with age)
  • Race/Ethnicity (high blood pressure is more common in African American adults than in Caucasian or Hispanic American adults)
  • Gender (before age 55, men are more likely than women to develop high blood pressure. After age 55, women are more likely than men to develop high blood pressure)
  • Family History
Plan a visit to your health care provider to learn your risk factors, your blood pressure reading and what steps you can take to prevent high blood pressure.
