From the Principal's Office
Dowell Families -

I hope that everyone has had a great week. Our teachers worked hard this week with their extended design time to really have deep conversations about what is being taught and how to ensure that students are engaged and being pushed to achieve their potential. I am really looking forward to seeing how this design time transfers into the classroom. Next week we will start our school wide fundraiser. We are selling popcorn from Mom and Popcorn on the square and your child will come home with information on Tuesday.  Please make sure that you check out the calendar below as we have lots of great things coming up between now and Spring Break!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Holly Rogers
Principal, Dowell Middle School
McKinney ISD participated in the prestigious American Mathematics Competition and we are proud to announce that Dowell took first place with three individual winners and the team win. Our winning students were presented with medals and a trophy and one of our students was recognized for having the highest score for the entire district. Congratulations to these hard working Lions and to all students who participated!

A healthy diet and lifestyle are your best weapons to fight cardiovascular disease. It's not as hard as you may think! Remember, it's the overall pattern of your choices that counts. Make the simple steps below part of your life for long-term benefits to your health and your heart:
  • Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or each week. Regular physical activity can help you maintain your weight and help you reach physical and cardiovascular fitness.
  • Eat an overall healthy diet that emphasizes a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, skinless poultry and fish, nuts and legumes, and vegetable oils.
  • Avoid foods with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to reduce trans fat in your diet.
  • Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars.
  • Choose foods with less sodium and prepare foods with little or no salt.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation.
  • Don't smoke tobacco - and avoid second hand smoke.

ViewPoint Student Lunch Survey
We Need Dowell Student Input!
The ViewPoint Student Survey results help identify:
  • Student satisfaction with common menu offerings.
  • Specific reasons why students decide to eat or not eat meals at school.
  • Student perception of performance across 16 key food, customer service and dining environment attributes.
  • Student thoughts about making healthy choices and most effective methods of communication nutrition information to them.
The electronic survey can be taken anywhere - school, at home, or on the go. It takes less than 15 minutes to complete.

The survey launches today and ends February 14th.

Prizes
  • Each student that completes the survey will receive a cookie when they present the completion coupon to a cashier in the cafeteria.
  • Schools that surpass 75% of their student population with responses will receive a catered luncheon, featuring Chef Jeremy's famous Chicken Spaghetti, for their teachers and staff.
  • Students have the option to enter to win one of 20 Beats headphones upon completion of the survey. Winners will be selected from all entries across the country.
