From the Principal's Office
Dowell Families -
We have had a great first week back from Spring Break. Students and teachers are ready to finish this last nine weeks strong. The 4th nine weeks brings our testing season. We have our first round of STAAR testing March 28th and 29th. Our 7th graders will take writing on the 28th. Our 8th grade math students will test on the 28th and all of our 8th graders will take reading on the 29th. Please make sure that your student has a good breakfast that morning. Students may bring a healthy snack and water bottle only to have during testing time. The 6th graders will have their regular schedule those days.

If your child sold popcorn for our fundraiser the pick-up day is Monday and the procedures for picking it up are in this newsletter.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call us.

Our tennis and track season are in full swing with UIL for fine arts coming up in April. Lots of great things are happening at Dowell and we love having your support at our events.

Have a great weekend!

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
Important Information Below
  • Students not riding buses should be dropped off in the front of the building and doors open for the school at 8:15 AM. The back parking lot is for MISD buses only from 8:00-8:30 AM.
  • There are 2 entry lanes at the front of the school next to each other. The right lane is for dropping students off. Please be patient and read/respect the signs posted to help understand the procedures. The left lane is for vehicles going to the south parking lot or exiting onto Ridge Road. For the safety of our students we ask that you never cut into the right lane from the left lane and that you never unload students from the left lane.
  • After 8:30 AM, parents are welcome to drop students off in the back.
  • The procedure will be the same after school with 2 lanes and we ask that no cars enter the back parking lot until buses have left. Please see the above directions for maneuvering through the drop off/pick up lanes in the front.
  • Vehicles exiting from the front or back of the building will be directed to turn right only on to Ridge Road.
  • Please be careful and watch for students walking in front of your car.
  • As it gets closer to 8:45 AM, the traffic increases so please try to arrive earlier for more convenience and a shorter wait.
*Be courteous to one another and help us keep our Dowell community safe!

Accidental poisonings by common household items kill more people than car accidents each year. Products we use every day such as medicines, household cleaning solutions, children's art supplies, makeup and other personal items can be toxic if used incorrectly.

Texas Student Success Initiative
The grade advancement requirements of the Texas Student Success Initiative (SSI), requires that grade 5 and grade 8 students meet the passing standards on STAAR tests in mathematics and reading before they can be promoted to the next grade. The purpose of this initiative is to ensure that every student makes the academic progress necessary to show a sufficient understanding of the knowledge and skills taught and tested at each grade level.

Each student is given three opportunities to pass the state assessment, with the first assessment date being Tuesday, March 28, 2017 for mathematics and Wednesday, March 29, 2017 for reading. Your child's teacher depend upon and look forward to working with you to help your child succeed. If you have any questions about your child's progress, please feel free to contact your child's teacher.
