From the Principal's Office
Dowell Families -

I hope that everyone enjoyed the three day weekend. I loved being able to spend time with all three of my kids. Last week we announced the winners for our Pennies for Pasta campaign. Our total as a school was $9,668.30. Our goal as a school was $2500.00 so you can see our DMS students are so awesome! Our class winners were Mrs. Morris, Ms. Janzen and Miss Bowman. Congrats to these classes. This week we will have our Lion Pride Awards. On Tuesday we will recognize our 6th grade and 7th grade A-L nominees and on Wednesday our 7th grade M-Z and 8th grade nominees. Both ceremonies will take place on the competition gym and will begin right at 8:00am. Our band students will participate in the UIL competition at the end of the week and the district track meet will be on Friday at Ron Poe stadium. I hope that you can join us for one of these great events.

Please see below that school supplies orders for next year are now being taken. I hope that everyone has a great week!

Sincerely,
Holly Rogers
Principal, Dowell Middle School
One of our Dowell Lions had her wish granted today from the Make-a-Wish organization during our last pep rally of the year. We wish her and her family a wonderful trip to Atlantis this summer!

Sun Safety

It's a fact: Overexposure to the sun can result in skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. Are you aware of the dangers of UV exposure? Did you know that it is possible to get a sunburn even on a cloudy day? On average, children get 3 times more sun exposure than adults. Follow these sun-safety tips year-round to help prevent serious skin damage:
  • The sun is strongest between 10 am and 4 pm.
  • Wear clothing that's dark and tightly woven.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Do not use tanning beds.
  • Keep very young children (6 months or less) out of the sun.
  • Sunscreens need to be applied liberally and evenly over all exposed areas (including neck, ears, and lips).
  • Apply a sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher whenever you're outdoors (SPF of 30 or higher for children). To achieve adequate UV protection you should use products that provide broad spectrum protection, which means protection against both UVB and UVA rays.
  • Apply sunscreen before going outdoors and reapply often including after swimming and perspiring.
  • For people with thin or thinning hair, apply sunscreen to the scalp as well.
  • Stay in the shade whenever possible
