From the Principal's Office
Dowell Families -

I cannot believe we are already one week into April. This year is flying by. We have some exciting events coming up in the next two weeks. Tonight our 7th graders will enjoy a NEON mixer from 6-8. Next week we will have our spring Read In day on Wednesday. Our spring pep rally and city track meet on Thursday. The Good Friday holiday falls on April 14th and school is closed that day. One of my favorite events, the Lion Pride Awards will be on April 18th and 19th. Yes, you are seeing it correctly that we have two dates set up because of the great number of students we are going to get to honor. On April 18th, we will honor students who were nominated for grade 6 and then the first half of grade 7 nominees with last names beginning with A-L. On April 19th we will honor the second half of the 7th grade nominees who have last names beginning with M-Z and then all our 8th grade nominees. Both ceremonies will take place in the Competition Gym beginning promptly at 8:00am. Invites will be coming home with students by Monday, April 10th.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Bicycle riding is fun, healthy, and a great way to be independent. But it is important to remember that a bicycle is not a toy; it's a vehicle. Before using your bicycle, make sure it is ready to ride. Inspect the bike to make sure all parts are secure and working properly. Always be sure to follow these basic safety tips when you ride:
  • Wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet: Protect your brain, save your life.
  • Check your equipment before riding: Inflate tires properly and check that your brakes work.
  • See and Be Seen: Always wear neon, fluorescent, or other bright colors when riding day or night. Remember, just because you can see a driver doesn't mean the driver can see you.
  • Control Your Bicycle: Always ride with at least one hand on the handlebars.
  • Watch for and avoid road hazards: Be on the lookout for potholes, broken glass, gravel, puddles, leaves, and dogs. All these hazards can cause a crash.
  • Avoid Riding at Night: It is more dangerous to ride at night because you are harder for others to see.
  • Many bicycle-related crashes are associated with the bicyclist's behavior (including not wearing a bicycle helmet, riding into a street without stopping, turning left or swerving into traffic, running a stop sign and riding the wrong way in traffic). To maximize your safety, always follow the rules of the road.
