From the Principal's Office
Dowell Families -

We have had a great week back after the Thanksgiving holidays. I hope that all of you were able to enjoy time with family and friends. This week and the next two weeks are some of my favorite times of the year. Seeing students grow in their academics and extra curricular makes my heart happy. We have lots of concerts and sporting events going on in the next two weeks and I hope to see some of you there to help support the great things going on here at Dowell!

Stay warm and dry this weekend.

Sincerely,
Holly Rogers

From the Nurse's Office

The weather is cooler and most of us are looking for ways to warm up our homes. Whether you light a fire or turn on your heater, there is one hazard that you need to be aware of -- carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that is produced by burning fuel. This means any fuel-burning appliance in your home is a potential source. Poisoning comes from inhaling enough of the gas that it replaces oxygen in the blood. Gas central heating, space heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, wood burning stoves, and water heaters are leading sources of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide can escape if these devices leak or are poorly vented. The initial symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to the flu but without fever. Here are some ways you can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning:
  • Install at least one smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home and near bedrooms.
  • Call a certified professional to inspect, clean, and tune up the central heating system and repair leaks.
  • Monitor appliances, chimneys, and vents for visible soot, rust, stains, blockage, or corrosion. Be sure to have them inspected each year. When in use, make sure they vent properly to allow gas to escape from enclosed areas.
  • Open flues when fireplaces are in use.
  • Never use generators indoors.
  • Use space heaters in well-ventilated areas.
  • Don't use a gas kitchen oven to heat your home.
  • Don't burn charcoal or use a grill indoors.
