From the Principal's Office
Dowell Families -

I hope that everyone had a wonderful week. I cannot believe that we only have two weeks of school until our Thanksgiving break. I guess that is what happens when you are having so much fun. You may have noticed that the carpool line in the morning has gotten a little bit longer. Our football and volleyball seasons are over and that means that over 200 students are now coming to school at the normal time each morning. I have posted the arrival and dismissal procedures again this week in our newsletter. Thanks for helping us to keep our kids safe.
Have a great week!

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
Important Information Below
  • Students not riding buses should be dropped off in the front of the building and doors open for the school at 8:15 a.m. The back parking lot is for MISD buses only from 8:00-8:30 am.
  • There are 2 entry lanes at the front of the school next to each other. The right lane is for dropping students off. Please be patient and read/respect the signs posted to help understand the procedures. The left lane is for vehicles going to the south parking lot or exiting onto Ridge Road. For the safety of our students we ask that you never cut into the right lane from the left lane and that you never unload students from the left lane.
  • After 8:30 am, parents are welcome to drop students off in the back.
  • The procedure will be the same after school with 2 lanes and we ask that no cars enter the back parking lot until buses have left. Please see the above directions for maneuvering through the drop off/pick up lanes in the front.
  • Vehicles exiting from the front or back of the building will be directed to turn right only on to Ridge Road.
  • Please be careful and watch for students walking in front of your car.
  • As it gets closer to 8:45 am, the traffic increases so please try to arrive earlier for more convenience and a shorter wait.
Be courteous to one another and help us keep our Dowell community safe!

From the Nurse's Office

As a parent, you strive to help your child develop into a healthy adult. An important part of your child's health is vision care. Your child's eyes must function properly to accomplish the many tasks that lie ahead. Children in the public school system will have a vision screening in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th grades. Here are some signs that you may notice if your child is having vision problems:
  • Frequent squinting
  • Short attention span or frequent daydreaming
  • A drop in scholastic or athletic performance
  • Poor eye/hand coordination
  • Complaints of headaches, double vision, or blurring
  • Omitting, miscalling, or repeating words when reading aloud
Because you can't look through their eyes, it is impossible to accurately judge how well your child sees. If you have concerns regarding your child's vision, please have your child's see their healthcare provider.
Spinal Screening for 8th Grade to Begin 11/7
Spinal screening on all eighth grade students will be conducted at Dowell beginning the week of November 7, 2016 and will continue through the end of January 2017.
The purpose of this screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. The procedure for screening is simple. Screening will be conducted during a specific time agreed upon by the teacher and campus nurse. Your child's back will be examined while he/she stands and then bends forward. Boys and girls will be screened separately. Boys will wear their pants or gym shorts and only remove their shirts. Girls are requested to wear a halter-top or a two-piece swimsuit. Parents will be notified of the results of the screening, only if professional follow-up is necessary. This screening procedure does not replace your child's need for regular health care and checkups. According to Texas law, these screenings must be conducted. In order for your child to be exempt from screening, you must present an exam form from a physician or notarized religious conflict affidavit prior to the screening date.

Make Your Teacher A Star!
The McKinney Education Foundation created an award to help you show your teacher how special he/she is to your student. Give your teacher a STAR (Staff, Teacher Appreciation and Recognition) Award during the holiday season, teacher appreciation week in May, for a birthday or anytime! Families can make a donation of $20 to make their favorite teachers an MEF STAR. Our MEF Trustees will personally deliver the awards to the teacher's classrooms and recognize your favorite teachers in front of their classes! Personal note of recognition is read to the teachers and they love hearing what makes them special to your student/family.

How can you make your teacher a STAR?
Complete the form HERE
Email, Fax, or Mail the form back to the MEF office with your $20 donation.
We are honored to have been chosen as a drop off campus for the Marines Toys for Tots Annual Toy Drive. From now until December 2nd, we will collect unwrapped toys for all ages.
