Hello Dowell Families - 
Today begins our Red Ribbon Week. Please see the flyer below for our dress up days next week. Please remember that Parent Teacher Conference Day is Monday, so no school for students. Dowell will be hosting the 7th grade B and C Volleyball Tournament on Saturday and we would love to see our Dowell community support our girls. Our 8th grade B and C Volleyball girls will compete at Faubion for their tournament. The annual MISD Holiday Bazaar will be at McKinney High School from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM on Saturday.

In Honor of Red Ribbon Week

Deidre Vetterick, high school impact counselor, and Jennifer Akins will be doing a one hour talk for parents ("Managing Stress Without Substances: Coping with Life's Pressures") on October 25, 2016. The presentation is part of our Parent Engagement Series and will be held at 6 PM at Faubion MS. We will have Spanish translators present.

Please help 6th grade support our troops! 
Often, soldiers go without basic necessities such as toothpaste, shampoo, chapstick, Kleenex, etc. We are collecting items to create care packages to show our gratitude for their service. Some acceptable donations include:
  • Powdered drink mix
  • Ramen noodles
  • Energy bars
  • Peanut butter
  • Hard candy (no chocolate, please)
  • Snacks in hard containers, such as Pringles
  • Ziplock baggies
  • Toothpaste, tooth brushes, floss
  • Hygiene products such as baby wipes, shaving cream, lip balm, eye drops, lotion (all travel sizes please)
  • Aloe Vera gel, Neosporin, After Bite
  • Disposable cameras
  • Ear buds
  • Magazines, cross word puzzles, word searches
  • Paper, envelopes, pens, pencils
  • Unused Christmas cards
Items can be dropped off in any 6th grade Social Studies classroom: G130, G129, F114. We are accepting donations through November 11th!

The City of McKinney will participate in the Nationwide Drug Take-Back event on Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. At this event, participants can safely dispose of all accumulated expired, unwanted and unused prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous. You do not have to be a resident of McKinney to participate.
Medicines that sit in home cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family, friends, and the home medicine cabinet.
Items that will be accepted:
  *   Prescription medications
  *   Over-the-counter medications
  *   Liquid medications
  *   Vitamins
  *   Pet medicine

City of McKinney Drug Take Back Event
The City of McKinney will be have a drug take-back event on Saturday, October 22. Dowell is celebrating Red Ribbon Week so we want to remind the students that building good character will help them bring out the best in themselves. Making smart choices every day - like saying yes to being a good person and no to using drugs. 

Please have your students read about these good character traits below:

National Dyslexia Awareness Month
In the spirit of National Dyslexia Awareness Month, Decoding Dyslexia Texas - McKinney, with support from McKinney ISD, will host a special screening of the film:

"Roadtrip Nation - Being You"

Wednesday, Oct. 26th at 6:00 p.m. at the MISD Greer Annex.
"Being You" is a documentary film produced by career exploration organization, Roadtrip Nation, in partnership with, the leading online resource for parents of children with learning and attention issues. 

This event is free and open to all people interested in learning more about dyslexia and learning differences.
