Down South on Main Is “Two Sweet” to Miss

Contributor: Jamie Richardson

This winner of multiple Independent Tribune Best of Cabarrus County awards is helping make Downtown Mount Pleasant a must visit destination in Cabarrus County.

The popular home décor shop, Down South on Main, is celebrating its two-year anniversary this weekend with a party you “donut want to miss!” Owner Melissa Lemmond and her employees (who are more like family) make this store a place that is warm, inviting, and full of laughter.

How Do These Social Media Stars Keep Everyone Smiling? Melissa first started doing Facebook Lives to sell her home décor items out of necessity during the pandemic. The Lives were like a favorite TV show to her followers, and she found a way to connect with people when connecting was hard.

Why Should You Visit? Melissa says, “Mount Pleasant is full of nostalgia. It’s home. It's historic. And while it's growing, it’s growing at a ‘Mount Pleasant pace,’ not the pace of neighboring cities and towns. It’s bringing the old to life but keeping it authentic.”

🍺 West Ave. Hot Spot Started as a Class Project

Old Armor Beer Company will be celebrating its 3rd anniversary and encourages you to “Come Grab a Pint of Freedom!”

Old Armor Beer Company is owned and operated by combat veterans Stefan Perrine and Kyle Lingafelt who met when they were studying for their MBAs at the University of Southern California.

  • As a project for school, they had to create a business model for a fictional company, and they decided on a brewery. During the project, several of their professors helped them refine the plan, and it eventually became the basis for their popular brewery in downtown Kannapolis.

🪖🇺🇸 Their military service is at the heart of everything they do in running their business and they give back whenever they can. While you cannot discount a beer for a veteran or first responder, the folks at Old Armor found a way to allow the community to say thank you with their “Pay It Forward Board.”

  • It allows anyone to buy a beer for a veteran or first responder in advance, with purchases kept on a tally board. By simply showing their ID, their beer is already covered. This small act of kindness can be just what that hero needed.

FUN FACT: Kannapolis introduced the state's first social district shortly after the legislature passed the law allowing them to exist, and Old Armor played a major role in making that happen!

  • Social districts are defined outdoor areas in which individuals can drink alcoholic beverages sold by permitted establishments.

🎉 Saturday, Feb 18th is Old Armor’s 3-Year Anniversary! and they will be celebrating with live music all day, multiple food trucks, $3 drink specials, raffle prizes, and more!

🍷 Toast National Wine Day at U.S.V.I. 🍷

Cabarrus Weekly is continuing its celebration of Black History Month by spotlighting another up and coming business here in our community and just in time for National Wine Day on February 18th!

Genia Vanterpool and Deidra-Ann Varlack, natives of the U.S. Virgin Islands, launched U.S.V.I. Wine Company on International Women's Day in 2021.

  • Inspired by their homeland, and love of wine, founders, Genia (born in St. Thomas) and Deidra-Ann (born in St. John) met as Girl Scouts at the age of 9.

They attended high school together but went their separate ways after graduation. Interestingly, fate and Facebook would bring them back together years later, in North Carolina of all places!

  • FUN FACT: In March, they plan to export their FIRST batch of wine back to the U.S. Virgin Islands!

Get to know more about how they got their start, why they chose Concord and plan to attend one of their many unique events!

  • Declared by the Mount Pleasant Town Board, Avett Day is recognized annually on Feb 7th as a special day to honor the Avett family, who have been part of their community since the 1940s with multiple members achieving great success in performing and visual arts.

Taking the musical lead from their father Jim Avett, Scott and Seth have taken their band The Avett Brothers worldwide sharing their love of American folk rock. While they are recognized all over the country, they still call Cabarrus County home.
