First Ever Akron Art Prize Competition Kicks Off Saturday, September 1

Akron Art Prize, sponsored by the Margaret Clark Morgan Downtown Art Works logo Foundation, kicks off Saturday, September 1 at the Downtown Artwalk. More than 135 artists have entered this unique competition where the public determines the outcome. Vote for what YOU think is the best art on your mobile device using text-to-vote technology and decide the winner of the $5,000 first prize and 5, $1,000 runners up.

Art will be on display at the following venues:
Akron Art Museum (outdoors)
Millworks Gallery
Redlight Gallery 

Summit Artspace
We Gallery


Voting begins at the Saturday, September 1 Artwalk and will continue through October 6.  Winner will be announced at the finale of the Artwalk on Saturday, October 6.

Downtown Akron Restaurant Week has been developed by the Downtown Akron Partnership Junior Board to encourage residents of the Akron area to explore the burgeoning dining scene in Downtown Akron. This four-day event provides reasonably priced prix fixe dinner menus at a variety of Downtown restaurants, making it easy and enjoyable to try something new!

Be a part of Summit for Kids. Summit for Kids is an annual family expo. Parents and children are invited to the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron to enjoy fun and educational activities, free back-to-school items and more.

The inspiration for Summit for Kids goes back to 2008, when the late Chief Justice Moyer and then Governor Strickland hosted a forum (called Summit on Children) on issues Ohio counties face in providing services for families and children. In light of the challenges discussed, they called on each county to create a task force dedicated to enhancing such services.

Saturday, August 18 & Sunday, August 19 hamburger festival

 

This year marks the 7th anniversary of the National Hamburger Festival. Over 120,000 hamburger fans have enjoyed family fun, great entertainment and one of the largest assortments of hamburgers ever assembled in one place. The Food Network filmed the festival for a segment on their hit show "Unwrapped".  The festival raises money each year for one of Akron's favorite charities, the Akron Children's Hospital.

Akron Roundtable Presents Eric Anthony Johnson
Executive Director, University Park Alliance

Eric Anthony Johnson's emergence as a national leader in urban development began in the mid-1990s - long before population shifts signaled renewed preferences for the urban core.

 

In his current role as executive director of Akron, Ohio's University Park Alliance (UPA), a nonprofit development corporation, Dr. Johnson is leading renewal efforts in the core section of this former Rubber Capitol of the World - now an emerging bio-tech city gaining national recognition for its creative economic development strategies.

6 p.m.: Pub Crawl begins with race results at ZAR Nightclub & Martini Bar, followed by stops at Primo's Deli, 69 Taps, and Paolo's

20th Annual STOMP Bike Ride
Saturday, September 1, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.  stomp
Lock 3, 200 S. Main St.

Choose one of three distances - 10, 20 or 30 miles - and enjoy a light breakfast, SAG support, lunch and live music during the "Summit Tour of Metro Parks," one of the largest cycling events in Northeast Ohio. All three routes are completely on the Towpath Trail. Adults must accompany riders younger than 16. Registration limit is 1,600 participants. Advance registration is online only and ends 8/20. Volunteer for the 10th Running of the Akron Marathon  akron marathon 2012
Grab your family, friends and co-workers and volunteer for the 10th running of the Akron Marathon on Saturday, September 29.  Volunteers are essential to the success of our event. As a volunteer for the Akron Marathon, you will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to your community, to meet new people and to share your skills and talents.  
 
The Akron Marathon is looking for groups, as well as individuals, to volunteer on either Friday, September 28, at the Health & Fitness Expo, or on race day, Saturday, September 29. Opportunities to volunteer on race day include: course support, relay exchange zones, the finish line, and more.

With a generous grant from the Knight Foundation, the Akron Area Arts Alliance (AAAA) has renovated the second floor of its growing arts center at Summit Artspace. Offering affordable, collaborative office opportunities for arts groups and creative industries, the central Downtown location also offers use of shared office equipment, free parking, kitchenette, oak-paneled conference rooms and 3,000 sq. ft. for performances, rehearsals,arts installations, events, etc.
