Downtown Retail Safety Summit

On Tuesday, October 25, Clean & Safe had the opportunity to host its first-ever Downtown Retail Safety Summit. This event brought together downtown Portland’s retailers (both large and small) with leaders from public service organizations to discuss the safety and security resources that are available as retailers enter their busiest season of the year. Included in the conversation were representatives from the Portland Police Bureau, Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, City of Portland, Portland Fire & Rescue, and the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.

Board Chair Terrence Paschal Participates in a Clean-a-Along

Earlier this month, new board chair Terrence Paschal took to the streets to shadow Clean Start Cleaner, Alex, during his cleaning shift. “I learned so much about what it’s like to do the hard work our cleaners do every day. It was eye-opening what our cleaners and security coordinators deal with on a daily basis in our downtown streets. It is important that our board members, businesses, and property owners acknowledge and offer their support for the difficult but important work Clean Start cleaners do every day”, shared Terrence.

The opportunity to shadow a Downtown Portland Clean & Safe cleaner or security coordinator is available to everyone. Interested? Contact Steve Wytcherley at swytcherley@portlandalliance.com to schedule a shift.

Kae Zariwny Honored with Unit Commendation Award

We would like to congratulate Kae Zariwny, Downtown Portland Clean & Safe’s Legal Assistant, for her recent Unit Commendation Award from the Portland Police Bureau. The bureau recognized Kae for her efforts in a long-term investigation and prosecution involving thefts of metal and catalytic converters. The investigation ran from February 2020 through June 2022.

Kae’s collaborative and thoughtful nature makes her an incredible teammate and we are grateful for her contributions to the community and DPC&S team.

Trained Hawks Assist with Roosting Crows in Downtown

On Thursday, October 27, Downtown Portland Clean & Safe and partner Integrated Avian Solutions hosted an urban falconry demonstration with stakeholders and media. The crow abatement program helps to limit interactions between humans and crows within a 72-block area of Downtown Portland by guiding the crows toward green spaces and parks.

This is the sixth year Downtown Portland Clean & Safe has worked with Integrated Avian Solutions to utilize urban falconry as a humane tactic to reduce the presence of roosting crows in the downtown core.

We hope you all enjoyed meeting the hawks that help keep our downtown streets a little cleaner!

Holiday Pop-Up Shops Are Coming!

PDX Pop-Up Shops are back! Pop-up shops turn Portland’s vacant retail space into temporary destinations for local designers and artists to “set up shop” for the holiday season. This year, there is an added incentive the chance to win two roundtrip tickets from Alaska Airlines! Shoppers who download and pay for their purchases with the Kuto app will be entered into the raffle.

This year's Holiday Pop-Up Shops lineup includes a favorite from last year, NW Ceramics. We also have several new businesses participating. Reeba Daniels and Uncommon Makers will present Marketplace PDX, a location featuring a variety of makers and businesses. The lineup will also introduce beverage retailers to the pop-up family, including sixteen urban winemakers at PDX Urban Wineries and Speed-o Cappuccio. These great pop-ups are rounded off by Landmark Unlimited, Matiz, and Parvaneh.

Each retailer captures the essence of our holiday theme this year: “Downtown, the Possibilities are Endless”. Keep an eye out later this month for the confirmed pop-up locations!
