50 Years - and Just Getting Started

It's a once-in-our-lifetime event, and we are excited to celebrate!

History, changes, improvements and achievements. I've been here 22 years, and I've witnessed a healthy dose of all of that - not the least of which was the "Bank of America to Borders Books to Marshalls" transformation, all  at the same 900 State Street address.

I was honored with the first Volunteer of the Year award in 2003, and I am delighted to be part of that legacy, named for one of our biggest fans, the late George Gerth. George was an 18-year city employee
(Streets, Transportation & Parking Manager) and longtime ex-officio DSB board member who passed away in early 2003. The award recognizes his commitment and enthusiasm when volunteering for DSB events, sharing his expertise, good cheer and sense of humor with everyone.
Each year, we bestow this award to one of our hardworking board members and each year it feels like the best choice ever. This award, along with our other annual awards, will make for an exciting
and emotional program on April 12th.

Presenting the 2009 George Gerth Volunteer of the Year Award to Dave Lombardi.

We hope you can join us - please see below for more info or to purchase tickets.

Downtown Santa Barbara's 50th Anniversary Gala!
Excitement is growing - our Gala is around the corner, and we can't wait to see you at the Fess Parker! In the few calm moments we have before April 12th, we want to express our gratitude to our Gala sponsors - we truly could not do this without you: your generous support has covered the costs of this anniversary celebration. Thank you for your vision, support and partnership, and we look forward to raising a glass with all of you!

Co-Hosts Mayor Helene Schneider and Roger Durling will help us re-honor many of our former Citizens of the Year. The evening will include a celebration of our history and achievements, including special comments from Marshall Rose. The evening's program also includes the announcement of our annual awards: the Harriet Miller Youth Leadership Award, the Downtown Business Champion of the Year, the George Gerth Volunteer of the Year
and the 2016 Citizen of the Year.

Tickets are still available for the Gala, click here or call 805-962-2098, ext 804.

Non-Profits to Know:

Sarah House

"A home for end-of-life care."

Sarah House provides a beautiful home and end-of-life care for people of low income.  It continues its original mission by providing for men and women with HIV/AIDS.  Additionally it offers comfort and assistance to family and friends of its residents.  It trusts that its work adds to the growing body of hospice wisdom.  All of this is carried out with what is called "extraordinary kindness."

In 1989, Alice Heath, a former public health worker, devoted her passion, time and energy to inspire the Santa Barbara community by founding a non-profit for men and women dying from HIV/AIDS. Heath House opened its doors to people who were not only dying at a young age,
but facing disgrace and fear.

In the mid 1990s, Sarah Shoresman, already well into her 80's, matched her countless service hours to our Board and its vision with a financial gift. This enabled us to operate a second home, this time named Sarah House.

With the advent of powerful new medications, the mortality rate for people with AIDS dropped wonderfully and dramatically. Sarah House responded by expanding services to offer end-of-life care for low income and homeless men and women of the Santa Barbara community.
