Syracuse Festival Fund: Round 3 Applications Due July 30
The Downtown Syracuse Foundation continues to accept applications for Round 3 of the Syracuse Festivals Fund, which was established to provide grant support for festivals and events that were negatively impacted by the pandemic. To be considered for Round 3 of funding, applications are due by 11:59 pm Saturday, July 30. Eligibility requirements, additional details, and a link for the application are provided below.

New Lease on Life, Coming Soon to Symphony Tower
We are learning more about plans to bring new life to Symphony Tower, also known as the Hotel Syracuse Tower. Hayner Hoyt Corp. is planning a $17.4 million renovation to reintroduce the property as Symphony Place. Plans call for 75 apartments and 40,000 square feet of commercial space. The tower was originally built in the 1980s as an annex to Hotel Syracuse, and closed in 2004.
The project is expected to begin in July, and is projected to be finished early in 2023.

50th Anniversary Season of the Downtown Syracuse Farmers Market:

This morning, the Downtown Farmers Market began its 50th season in Clinton Square. Continuing every Tuesday through October 11, Clinton Square will be the place to find fresh, locally-grown fruit, vegetables and plants, as well as baked goods and specialty items including homemade soaps and pet treats, rain or shine! New this year – to help celebrate the milestone 50th Anniversary season – we’re introducing “ Community Days” to celebrate and show our appreciation for all of the industries and sectors that contribute to our vibrant neighborhood.
The “Lunchtime Live Music Series,” which will be held every week – weather permitting – at The Market from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm. Tom Gilbo, aka “Elvis” will kicked things off today. Next week, Jim Lamica will perform jazz tunes to celebrate Syracuse Jazz Fest returning to Downtown Syracuse.

All Love Comes Home Book Signing by Gene Fisch

The Onondaga Historical Association will host author Gene Fisch for a book discussion and signing this week. Gene Fisch wrote All Love Comes Home: A Promise of Truth which is part memoir, part tribute to his parents. The book features a variety of lessons taught by his parents, Polish immigrants who escaped the shadow of war and a decades-long occupation by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. The book was published in 2012, and maintains relevance as the world responds to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Syracuse Juneteenth Festival will be the first in Syracuse since Juneteenth became recognized as a State and Federal holiday. The festival acknowledges the role that the people of Central New York played in achieving and maintaining freedom, equality and opportunity for Black and Brown Americans.

The community is invited to watch as the Juneteenth Flag is ceremoniously raised at City Hall.

A variety of activities are planned and the community is invited to come out and show your support! There will be performers, games for families and children and food vendors to satisfy your food cravings.
Miss Juneteenth Pageant
5:30 pm at The City Hall Commons Atrium
Young women across Central New York are invited to participate in the Miss Juneteenth and the Little Miss Juneteenth pageant. The pageant is a place to celebrate Black sisterhood and promote a deeper understanding of coming to age as a young woman.

Juneteenth Parade
11:00 am starts at The Dunbar Association and ends at City Hall
The parade will kick off at the Dunbar center and will make its way through the Southside, up North Salina Street and conclude in front of City Hall.

12:00 pm to 10:00 pm in front of Syracuse City Hall
The festivities continue on Saturday with a fashion show, African dance performances and more.

Street Closure Information: In order to set up, present and breakdown the event, the following street closures will take place:
Beginning at 7:00 am on Thursday, June 16, the 300 block of East Washington Street will be closed.
Beginning at 5:00 pm on Thursday, June 16, Montgomery Street from East Water Street through East Fayette Street, Market Street from East Washington Street through East Water Street and the 200 block of East Washington Street, east of the KeyBank drive-through will be closed.
East Fayette Street will be open for eastbound and westbound traffic. The Key Bank Parking lot will remain open and accessible via East Fayette Street.
All streets will reopen by the late morning on Sunday, June 19.

Juneteenth Free Community Day
at The Everson Museum of Art

The Everson Museum of Art will host a free community day with educational activities and events focused on celebrating Black and Brown culture and heritage. The programming is made possible by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding from the City of Syracuse and supported by a Humanities New York Vision/Action Grant. The programming coincides with an opportunity to learn about the exhibit, Sharif Bey: Facets, through the artist’s eyes and words, as he leads a tour.

Local artist and educator Vanessa Johnson will lead visitors in creating red, black and green Pan-African "Freedom Flags" to celebrate the end of slavery in America.
Crossing Bar Lines: The Politics and Practices of Black Musical Space

Dr. James Gordon Williams will present a lecture on creative music and social justice featuring his book, where he reframes the nature and purpose of creative improvisation to highlight the cultural work of five creative musicians from 2005 - 2019. The lecture will be followed by a piano trio performance.
Sharif Bey: Facets Gallery Tour
2:15 pm to 3:15 pm, Meet at Sculpture Court
Starting at 2:15 pm, Sharif Bey will lead a tour through his exhibit, Sharif Bey: Facets, which is his largest solo exhibition to date. The exhibit amasses work Bey has done over the last two decades - in ceramics, glass and mixed media sculpture - to explore issues of power using the visual heritage of West Africa, Oceania and contemporary African American Culture.

This weekend, the Polish Community Club of Utica is hosting a three-day Polish extravaganza at Clinton Square! The festival features live music, authentic Polish food, Polish beer, Polish merchandise and more. Polish cuisine including Potato & Cheese Pierogis, Cabbage Pierogis, Kielbasa Sandwiches, Kapusta, Chrusciki, and the popular Polish plates, are on the menu.

Street Closure Information: In order to set up, present and breakdown the event, the following street closures will take place:
Beginning at 6:30 am on Friday, June 17, West Water Street between Salina Street and Clinton Street, Erie Boulevard West between Clinton Street and Franklin Street and Clinton Street between Genesee Street and Washington Street will close to vehicular traffic.
The 200 block of West Water Street will be made into a temporary two way beginning at 6:30 am on Friday, June 17 until late morning on Monday, June 20.
All streets will reopen by late morning on Monday, June 20.

Building Digital Worlds with Drones & Geospatial Technology

The Junior Café series by The Technology Alliance of Central New York is returning to The Museum of Science and Technology (The MOST) this weekend! Attendees will learn about how scientists and engineers at Ramboll, a global technology firm with an office in Downtown Syracuse, are using drones and geospatial technology to build digital worlds. Jason Newton, a scientist with Ramboll, will lead the lesson. He'll explain what it takes to fly a drone professionally, the types of sensors used, and how the data collected from the sensors are used to create digital models, or "digital twins."

Next week, Syracuse Jazz Fest returns to Downtown Syracuse with three days of concerts and performances planned.
The party gets started on Thursday, with performances happening in various venues and restaurants including The Landmark Theatre, Pastabilities, Funk 'n' Waffles, Clinton Street Pub, and more.
On Friday, the festival will move to the main stage at Clinton Square, featuring a variety of well-known jazz performers, including The Salt City Jazz Collective, Sheila Jordan Trio, David Sanborn Electric Band and the Average White Band.
On Saturday, the Joey DeFrancesco Trio will open the festival. The Urban Knights, Boney James and Nathan Williams & The Zydeco Cha Cha's will keep the vibe going through the day and into the evening.
