Ignite Juneteenth in Syracuse
|
This week, join the call for nominations to recognize Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in the food, fashion and film industries! This is the first component of an eight-week campaign designed to Ignite Juneteenth throughout Syracuse. Community members are encouraged to join the campaign and celebrate Black-owned businesses by following the hashtag #SYRIgniteJuneteenth and sharing featured content on social media pages. To get involved, send an email to syrignitejuneteenth@gmail.com.
Organizers of the Juneteenth Festival, the City of Syracuse and AT&T partnered to launch the campaign to boost Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in Syracuse, culminating with the Juneteenth Holiday on Saturday, June 19.

Win $500 in Paid Marketing Services
|
Businesses located throughout Downtown Syracuse are invited to partner with other City of Syracuse businesses to host an event or special promotion. Each business collaboration is eligible to win $500 in paid marketing services provided by the Downtown Syracuse Foundation. Additionally, CNY Latino has joined this collaboration and will offer a 40% discount on ads placed within its publication that are tied to this promotion, helping to better connect our LatinX community with area businesses.
Examples of eligible activities are provided in the link to the program overview, below. Businesses may apply through Thursday, May 6 by filling out this program application and submitting it to Laurie Reed, Marketing Director of the Downtown Committee (LReed@DowntownSyracuse.com).

"Open for Business" Campaign
|
To provide visual cues that Downtown Syracuse is open for business, every street-level Downtown Syracuse business that wants a "Downtown is Open" flag may order one, free of charge. The flags will be installed in May 2021 and will be customized with the logo of each business. They're available in five different colors. Interested businesses are encouraged to reach out to Heather Schroeder, Director of the Downtown Committee's Economic Development program via phone (315-470-1958) or email (HSchroeder@DowntownSyracuse.com).

Redeem Keeping It Local Vouchers
|
Including today, there are 15 days remaining to redeem “Keeping it Local” vouchers for gift cards at your favorite participating Onondaga County restaurants. Vouchers must be redeemed by May 10. Customers were able to reserve vouchers in $25 increments ($25 - $100) when the pilot program launched early last week. When vouchers are redeemed, restaurants will match that amount by providing a gift card. Then, the restaurants get reimbursed through funding provided by Onondaga County. Designed to boost businesses for restaurants, the program sold out in five hours! Onondaga County is already planning to offer a second round of vouchers.

The Redhouse's Next Season
|
The Redhouse Arts Center has announced its 2021 - 2022 season. Four shows are planned, including the Tony Award-winning musical Sister Act, Fences (rescheduled from 2020), Macbeth, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Space will be reimagined in order to provide a thrilling theater experience that allows for social distancing and a safe return to live theater.

The Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. is hiring two seasonal staff members to join its Environmental Maintenance crew. They will drive a tractor with a watering tank through Downtown Syracuse and water the hanging flower baskets. Interested applicants will:
- Work 35 hours/week
- Have a valid Drivers License
- Be comfortable standing, walking, and lifting a watering wand for extended periods of time.

Up Close Artist Series (Virtual)

The Everson Museum of Art continues its Up Close Artist Series inspired by its new exhibit, Who What When Where. This Thursday, neighbors have an opportunity to hear from artist Ehren Tool, a ceramics studio manager at UC Berkely and US Marine Corp Veteran. He will be joined by special guest Omar Columbus, a poet, photographer, and fellow veteran who will give a spoken word performance. The exhibit poses questions about how stories are constructed, interpreted, and revised according to time, place, and positions of power. The series features works by more than 50 artists.

There's still time to register for the McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center's Step Up 4 Kids 5K and Fun Run! The annual event helps to support the center's work to help children who have been physically and/or sexually abused.
