Equitable Commits to Staying in Downtown Syracuse
Equitable, a financial services company headquartered in Downtown Syracuse, will invest $65 million to upgrade its office space and keep 740+ jobs in Downtown Syracuse. The upgrade - made possible with help from a $9 million grant from Empire State Development - includes plans to make its space flexible and dynamic. The company has also committed to continuing to support the community through philanthropic and social impact work. The Equitable Foundation provides support to The Museum of Science and Technology (The MOST) and other local organizations.

City Center Groundbreaking Announcement
On Tuesday morning, representatives from Hayner Hoyt, Onondaga County, The City of Syracuse and the Downtown Committee gathered to officially break ground on a transformative project in the Heart of Downtown Syracuse. New life is coming to 280,000 square feet of space on the corner of Jefferson and Salina Streets in the form of Hayner Hoyt’s City Center. The building’s new chapter started in 2018, when the Redhouse Arts Center moved in. Later this year, Hayner Hoyt and defense contractor Alion Science and Technology will move its headquarters into the space, and 24 apartments are planned for the floors above.

FREE COVID-19 Testing Available in Downtown Syracuse
Do you need to get a COVID-19 test? City Testing Services continues to operate a testing site at The Landmark Theatre building, located at 116 W. Jefferson Street (map). The site offers rapid tests (delivering results in 15-minutes) and PCR tests (which go to a lab and deliver results within 48-hours). Testing is free for all, and the site is open six days a week. The site is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm. The last test occurs at 5:45 pm. On Saturday, the site is open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, and on Sunday, the site is typically closed – unless there is an event at the Landmark Theatre that night. Please bring photo identification and an insurance card if you have one. However insurance is not necessary. Testing is free and open to all.

CenterState CEO continues to accept nominations for its Business of the Year Awards this week. Do you know a business - even your own - that made a big impact or celebrated growth in 2021? Categories eligible for recognition include:

Nominees must be a CenterState CEO member, except for the minority-owned business nominees, which must be a member Upstate Minority Economic Alliance (UMEA).

There's Still Time to Register for Downtown Challenge '22
As we look forward to February 2, 2022 - the launch date of our Challenge '22 - we would like to remind interested participants to register by or on this Saturday to receive your materials in time. We'll mail Downtown guides, a task list and other items to help you get started. On February 2, our team will post a list of tasks to choose from. The goal is to complete 22 tasks in any order. As participants complete tasks, they'll earn puzzle pieces. When the challenge is complete, participants will have enough pieces to complete a commemorative puzzle thanks to a partnership with the Syracuse Poster Project. A sample image is shown above.

Landmark Theatre Offers Express Pass Opportunity
Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, January 19, the Landmark Theatre will offer a one-time vaccination verification card (called the Express Pass) to expedite entry into the theatre ahead of events and performances. The Express Pass will include first and last names, along with a photo, consolidating vaccine records and identification to one card. To get your Express Pass, bring a government - issued or school identification and either your physical vaccination card, New York State Excelsior Pass, or government issued digital vaccine proof (if vaccinated outside of New York State). Landmark staff will issue Express Passes in the Salina Street vestibule this week, starting Wednesday January 19 to Friday, January 21 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Next week, the passes will be offered from Tuesday, January 25 through Friday, January 28 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Staff will also assist neighbors from Monday, January 31 through Wednesday, February 2 and from Monday, February 7 to Friday, February 11 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The Erie Canal Museum kicks off its 2022 Lunchtime Lecture series this week with a discussion focused on Benjamin Wright, who is considered a pioneer in the civil engineering field. Wright's career spanned 50 years in the 1700s and the 1800s. He worked on the railroads, surveyed the Mohawk River for navigation improvements and supervised the engineering of the Erie Canal among other important contributions.
Please note, The Erie Canal Museum is closed to the public this week. It will re-open Monday, January 24 at 10:00 am.

Art lovers and artists can experience the joy of working with clay and creating their own coil pots at The Everson Museum of Art. Attendees will create their masterpiece using ancient clay hand-building techniques, which originated in Central Mexico more than 4,000 years ago. All materials will be provided. After creation, the jars will be glazed and fired, and available for pickup at a later date.

PS: This Thursday marks the first Third Thursday Tour of 2022 at the museum.
