New Marker in Clinton Square to Commemorate Historic Visit of Revolutionary War Hero

The visit of a Major General of the Revolutionary War to Clinton Square in 1825 will be commemorated this Friday, with the unveiling of a historical marker in Clinton Square. Marquis de Lafayette was a young French aristocrat that fought alongside the Americans during the American Revolution. Almost 50 years later, as the last surviving Major General of the Revolutionary War, Lafayette was invited on a tour of the Union on his way to the dedication of the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston. This Farewell Tour gave citizens an opportunity to express gratitude for the support given by Lafayette during the fight for Independence. His visit to Syracuse inspired the names of Fayette Street and Fayette Park in Downtown Syracuse, as well as the local municipalities, LaFayette and Fayetteville.
The historic marker will be dedicated this Friday, September 24 at 3:00 pm.

Attention Central New York Greenhouses!

The Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. is now accepting bids from flower growers for the 2022 hanging flower season! The program, which brings hundreds of purple petunias to Downtown’s streetscape every summer, started in 2009 in the Cathedral Square neighborhood of Downtown Syracuse with just 75 baskets. It has since grown to include as many as 350 baskets throughout the Heart of Downtown, the Cathedral Square, Hanover Square, Clinton Square and Armory Square neighborhoods. The program provides for 350 fifteen-inch (15”) baskets of purple petunias, as well as quantities of 12” and 10” baskets and sweet potato vines. The majority of the 15” baskets are attached to streetlight poles throughout the downtown district, starting the week after Memorial Day each year. The flower baskets are watered daily by a seasonal watering crew and remain on display until the Friday after Labor Day. In total, the baskets are on display for about 3.5 months.

Downtown Living Tour: Tourist Tips

Historic Facts: Downtown Syracuse is fortunate to have preserved much of its historic building stock, and these historic renovations have fueled much of Downtown's rebirth. To help commemorate the Tour's 15th Anniversary, the Downtown Committee partnered with the Preservation Association of Central New York (PACNY) and the Onondaga Historical Association (OHA) to share these important stories. By scanning a QR code on signage identifying Tour Stops, tourists will cue up a short video highlighting fun facts about the properties, told from the perspective of PACNY. "Bonus History Stops," curated by the OHA, will be highlighted in a brochure - also featuring scannable QR codes - which may be picked up at our Information Booth (located in Perseverance Park) and at select Tour Stops along the route.

Downtown Deals: 20 special deals have been curated, designed specifically for Downtown Living Tour attendees. The deals are accessible on Pages 8 & 9 of the Tour Program. Your tour wristband serves as your ticket, and grants you access to the deals.
Tickets are on sale online through this Thursday, for $15. Tickets purchased online may be picked up at our Information Booth in Perseverance Park (map) on Saturday, September 25.

On Saturday (the day of the event), tickets will be sold from our Information Booth for $15 (cash or check only) from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.

Tourists are encouraged to contact the tour stops to arrange for a private tour at their convenience.
Building Preview: The Smith Lofts
Address: 500 - 506 Erie Blvd East (map)

The Smith Lofts, a historic mixed-use building dating back to the days of the Erie Canal, is undergoing a historic renovation, by Paulus Development. The building will be home to 38 modern luxury one-bedroom, one-bathroom lofts with commercial space on the first floor. Preleasing for move-in later this fall has begun!
Each luxurious loft unit will feature remarkable, over-sized windows with custom shades, original hardwood or concrete flooring and exposed brick. Originally constructed in 1883, 500 Erie Boulevard East holds a starring role in the history of the Erie Canal. As a double-ender building, it was used to facilitate the transfer of materials and goods between canal boats and warehouses. 506 Erie Boulevard East, the six-story portion of the building adjacent to 500 Erie Boulevard East, was constructed in 1897 and substantially remodeled in 1910. The buildings were most recently home to Smith Restaurant Supply. As a tribute to the multi-generational family-owned business, The Smith Lofts logo features a mixer.
Tour Stop: 246 - 250 Water
Address: 246 - 250 E. Water Street (map)

Believed to have been first established in the 1920s, The Renaud Wicks and Falker Buildings are in the final stages of an amazing transformation. Redeveloped by Urban Realty Group, the buildings - once treated as separate addresses - have been combined. The newly revamped third floor is home to two one-bedroom apartments. Both feature custom cabinetry, high-end countertops, stainless steel appliances and a wine/beer fridge. A common area presents a stylish foyer and entry into each unit. The larger of the two units features two full bathrooms and a study. The second unit includes one bedroom, one bathroom and a reading room. The building's character is preserved through the restoration of the original steel elevator doors, as well as highlighting exposed brick and original exposed wood ceilings. When renovations on the first floor are complete, a new wine and whiskey bar will be introduced in the space, projected to open next spring.
