Living Windows
Dozens of downtown storefronts will come to life during the 20th annual Living Windows celebration on Thursday, December 13 from 6 to 8 PM. The event includes ice sculpting, carolers, puppet shows, treats, marshmallow roasting with the Burlington Fire Department, crafts, the festival of trees at the Burlington Apartments, storytellers, free horse drawn trolley rides, and much more. Visitors can stop by Santa's Cottage in Nancy Neafie Park, sample some holiday goodies, and do some shopping, too. Thanks to presenting sponsor Pritchard Broadcasting for making the Downtown Partners holiday events possible.
Holiday Shop Hops Continue
Every Thursday evening until Christmas, many downtown merchants will be open late to fit customers' busy schedules. The great majority of retail shopping takes place after 5 PM. Happily, we are seeing more businesses embrace evening and weekend hours (which also plays off the restaurant traffic), making downtown even more of a destination.
Here Comes Santa Claus!
The jolly old elf himself will be greeting visitors in downtown Burlington at Nancy Neafie Park on the corner of Sixth and Jefferson. Santa will be at his cottage during the Holiday Shop Hops on December 6 and 20 from 6 to 8 PM, as well as during Living Windows. There is no cost, and cameras are welcome. Creating fond memories of downtown for families today helps build support for downtown tomorrow! Many thanks to Carl A. Nelson & Co., Jerry Johnson, and Andy Bentley for their assistance with Santa's Cottage.
Indoor Winter Market
The Jefferson St Farmers Market is hosting another Saturday indoor market on December 15 at the Capitol Theater from 10 AM to 2 PM. Some of your summer favorites will be back to enjoy this holiday season. While you're downtown shopping, stop in for holiday baked goods, fall produce, fresh eggs, local honey, soaps, and handcrafted goodness!
The Latest News...
  • While we are terribly saddened to be losing the landmark Tama and C & E buildings, we are hopeful that the demolition will go quickly and safely, and that a development worthy of the site will rise in its place. Developer Doug Wells is scheduled to give the city council an update on December 10. At last word, demolition is supposed to be completed and Jefferson St. reopened by December 19.
  • We're very pleased that DPI has received a $75,000 Main Street Challenge Grant for work to rehab 805 Jefferson. The project will include a restored fa├žade, a new apartment, and a rehabbed first floor space that will include the region's first shared use commercial kitchen. Developer Tom Wolf is eager to get started - stay tuned!
  • Thanks to the handful of volunteers, sponsor Pritchard Broadcasting, the Des Moines Co. CERT team, and all the participants who made the Lighted Holiday Parade such a big success. This year's detour route worked fine, and it was great to have so many people enjoying family time downtown on a beautiful evening!
  • And lastly, thank you to Bill Partain of Two Rivers Bank & Trust for his six years of service on the DPI board, including a year as board chair. We appreciate his leadership.
